The Curmudgeon & Redo

Though my wife preferred "The Judge".  She was focused on the black robes and I was focused on the expression.

I went to Ridgefield NWR Monday and worked the driving loop at the River "S" unit.  All the areas that used to be shallow lakes are wet meadows with relatively small ponds this fall.  I don't know whether they intend to refill them or not.  This made for a significant change in the birds that were around, though there were still quite a few Canada Geese and more Sandhill Cranes than I remember from past years, though they may just be passing through.

7DII, Sigma 150-600 C @ 244 mm, beanbag on car window, f/7.1, 1/125, iso 1250, aperture priority, pattern metering.  Processed in LR5 & CS6.  Cropped from a horizontal original to an 8.1 MP 4x5 vertical.  There was a small very oof dark area just over the head that looked really odd, so I cloned over it.  Other than that just noise reduction and selective sharpening of the bird.  Taken at 7:46 AM on October 10th.

Comments and criticisms are always appreciated.

Thanks,

How about: The Curmudgeon Judge? (or is that redundant?)  I find getting a good shot of a blackbird with a good background to be a challenge. This meets both challenges. Nice shot.

Dennis I really like the soft tones and the balance of this composition. Just enough foliage not to interfere with the main subject with a pleasing BG. You were able to keep very good detail in feathers with the black colors. Nicely done.

One of the best images I've ever seen of a Red-winged Blackbird.  Totally in focus, perfect exposure, exquisite detail.

Very nice, Dennis. An amusing expression on the bird and great details in the blacks. I think it is interesting how many recent photos here at NPN Avian show the wear in the feathers, like you guy's tail here.

Every time I've looked at this post, the blackbird looked a little fogged out to me, so I finally went back and did a levels adjustment to bring the blacks a little more in line.  Here's the result.

Hi Dennis
The Red-winded Blackbird really pops. You did a nice job with blacks.

Sweet image of this common species, Dennis. Exposure on the darks look spot on and the subject in the repost pops out satisfactorily. I like your composition, particularly the perch and included habitat. The overall color scheme is also very pleasant and complementary. devil
