Dead Tree Walking

I'm a bit out of my wheelhouse, so comments and suggestions are appreciated, but I liked the almost humanoid look of the dead tree and played with it in LR and PS to bring out some detail (it was heavily shadowed).  Taken at Manzanita Lake in Lassen NP.

That's some rich blue! The tree is a great shape to add to the scene. I like the idea of the detail in the tree, but It does look a bit incongruous in the shadows based on the rest of the lighting. I'm not sure if this is a scene you can get back to, but if so I'd be tempted to shoot it really early or late; in the blue hour. That way you could keep the rich blues, but have the scene more evenly lit.

You brought out the form and detail in the stump pretty well, Allen, although some of the transition areas between the black edges and the lighter gray wood seem a little off when viewed in the larger image. Maybe it is that was naturally. I agree it has interesting form and makes a good focal point for the wider shot of the lake, and you positioned it well in the frame. I also like the reflection of the trees on the far shore and the blue color of the lake.

Allen,

Makes me think of Sasquatch..... ;-)  Really though a unique weathered tree stump and certainly a worth element to include.  Kind of in line with comments so far, I think the stump looks more like it was hit with a flash; it just doesn't quite mesh with the natural lighting of the far shoreline.  You certainly did a great job bringing out the details of the tree, I would just back off that a little bit so it fits more naturally with the scene.

Love the stump and the title here, Allen!  The larger view is truly eye popping with the intense blues setting off that crazy stump wonderfully.  The details in the stump are great also.

Wow, cool stump!!! I would agree with the previous comments and the look of a flash being used. I would tone that down a bit. Also, maybe a little CCW rotation? The shoreline and trees seem to tilt to the right to my eye.
