Leaf

I don't know what this is.  It's just an ornamental I picked up in downtown Olympia and pressed in waxed paper because I liked the shape and colors.  Some experiments with other leaves indicated that iot might submerge, so I used some double-sticky tape to attach a small piece of balsa wood to the under side and placed it in our pond.  We pull the pump in the winter so there's no flow and there was just the tiniest bit of breeze this morning.

5DIII, EF180 f/3.5L macro, tripod, f/16, 1/160, iso 800, aperture priority, pattern metering, + 1 1/3 EV.  Processed in LR5 & CS6.  I removed a lot of very small bugs from the water in post processing.  Taken at 10:25 AM under mostly cloudy skies.

I'm particularly interested in your thoughts on the rock and its reflection.

Comments and criticisms are always appreciated.

Thanks,

I like this a lot, Dennis. Very artisitic. I like the way the leaf color stands out in the otherwise gray image, and the sharpness in the leaf is outstanding. Glad you asked about the rock. It really does not add and to me detracts a little from the leaf (versus the grass reflection whcih does complement the leaf, IMO). If this were mine, I would crop down below the rock and reflection.

Dennis: My thoughts echo Scott's. At first I thought the rock was OK but when I scroll down and crop it away I do like the result better. Well conceived and superbly executed. >=))>

Dennis, the detail in the leaf and the surface tension around it is spot on. The OOF grass is a nice vegetative complement to the leaf. The rock doesn't add anything, and I agree with Scott pretty much, although keeping the frame the same size is a viable option (and a better one IMO). Just use a content aware selection to delete the rock and reflection.

Hi Dennis,

I prefer this version over your rock-less comp.  This one has a little more tension in the comp than the other one and there's more available for the eye.......................Jim
