Kenaston, SK

We go on a family vacation to Glacier NP, Banff, Lake Louise, up the Jasper Parkway to Edmonton, and what do I take photos of?  Wooden grain elevators, just like I have a thousand of in the Dakotas.sad  Must have been the light. cool

Kent, I couldn't not look at an image of a small town elevator against a stormy sky (having grown up living in towns like this...).  Love the light, the stormy sky, and the strong sense of isolation.  It does feel like there's a bit of a ccw tilt to the scene.

Excellent comp with the vanishing point, Kent.  Reminds me of some in west Texas.

Kent, like Mark S. it's hard not to think about our roots when seeing scenes like this. What is harder to imagine is So Cal was very rural at one time when I was growing up and grain elevators, large haystacks, and potatoe packing plants were very common place. I worked a couple different farms & ranches growing up and back then we could start at 12 years old. Not sure that is possible with rules and laws these days. In fact one job I had was to spray weeds in orange groves with diesel fuel. Very common practice back then but probably another no no now. Whenever I get a whiff of diesel fuel now it immediately takes me back to the orange groves.

Anyway, to me this scene screams the prairie or open plains environment. A wonderful documentary shot.

The sky and the light really make this one for me.  Yes the leading lines are good too but the warm light and the typical American small town scene create a wonderful documentary.  While I didn't grow up in this environment like many of you, I have spent a lot of time driving across America and have witnessed these small towns on many occasions.  Nice!

I would have guessed this was in Kansas!  Great light and fine composition.  Thanks for sharing.

Reminds me of growing up in Iowa.  Interesting how photos sometimes elicit this visceral reaction.
