In line with David Schoen's last post.  It was windy and pretty cool here today.  The bird's were pretty much going straight to the feeders, but when the traffic got heavy some of them would stop on the way in.  I really liked the brilliance and shade of this House Finch's plumage and the puffed out look was a nice bonus.

7DII, Sigma 150-600 C @ 600 mm, Jobu Gimbal on blind window, f/8, 1/160, iso 1000, aperture priority, pattern metering, fill flash at -1 2/3 compensation.  Processed in LR5 & CS6.  Cropped to 12.9 MP before resizing.  Taken at 9:53 AM under overcast skies.  I didn't warm this image at all as I liked the particular shade of red as it appeared in the field.

Comments and criticisms are very much appreciated.

Thanks for looking,

Nice subject and excellent detail and exposure. If you've got it in the uncropped file I wouldn't mind a little more on the bottom.

I will echo Richard's thoughts:  Great shot, but could use more room on the bottom.

Really nice detail in the finch Dennis, but I agree that a little more room on the bottom would be beneficial.

Nice sharp shot.  I agree with your decision not to warm the color.  This looks to me like a very natural colored house finch.

Great detail and sharpness.  I love the pose and the windblown feathers.  I also agree with your decision not to warm the color, the red color looks just like house finches I've seen.

Thanks for all the comments.  I was trying to minimize the perch, but I realized when I posted it that it looked a bit awkward.  Here's a version with nothing off the bottom and a slightly different crop and treatment of the bg. which had some large white circular patches from the oof openings in the trees behind the bird.

You can click on the image for a 1200 pixel version.

The repost/recomposition is an improvement.  Nice color and detail.  Really nice use of fill flash, an art I have yet to master.

Yes, the second version is better IMO with more of the perch visible. It provides a better base to the image.

Nicely done with the wind.  It changes things up a bit.  Really good detail on this one Dennis along with the good lighting.
