I was in the Santa Barbara area on a recent project and was subjected to much needed rain during our trip. This was the view of an approaching storm one evening. One shot, converted to B&W easily due to little to no color in the original image. I liked the layers in the clouds and the wind blown water. Hand held, 90% of full frame.

I have to say that the NPN large version is much better. The tones are excellent, and I love the mood. There is a dark spot in the water between the coastal mountains on the left and the left-most tree. The texture in the water works well, and I love that sky.

Thanks Preston for taking the time to comment on this image and your kind words are encouraging.
The dark spot is a Pelican flying by that shows well enough in the printed version but I was undecided about eliminating it in the smaller web version as I was unsure how well it worked but now I know. Re-post without the Pelican.

Beautiful stormy sky.  I prefer it without the pelican. You shoot more in Santa Barbara than I do and I live here. :) Nice image.

I definitely prefer the version without the pelican, Mike.  Love the silhouettes of the agave stalks and the outstanding sky.  Makes a very compelling b/w image.

Mike,

This is excellent, and refreshing.  Refreshing because it's different - I like how you've juxtaposed the century tree?  in front of the grand seascape.  the wind blown waves and the dramatic sky compliment each other - although if I had a suggestion it would be to decrease the contrast in the sky a tad.  Otherwise, this is fantastic.

The pelican... yeah, I can see it's value in a much larger presentation, but at these sizes, it's just a black speck.  Looks better without.

Different and interesting. Really stark, with the B&W, but the elements are positioned just right.
