Dunes 2

Another image from my morning out on Mesquite Dunes. This one shortly after sunrise. The sunrise color is not that great, but I like pattern in the sand, so I again converted this to B/W. Thank you for your comments and suggestions on my previous image. Thoughts on this one? D600, 18-35 @ 18, hh GNDs, 1/10, f20.

Another beauty from that morning.  Would really like to see these sometime, your images are motivating. Suggestions are mnor, as very impactful as is.  Might crop out far left, small dune - too close to the edge and pulls my eye over there, which maybe isn't such a bad thing but the rest of the image  is directing me center and right.  Also, appears to be a circular erasure stroke in the sky centrally over the clouds that doesn't seem consistent with the sky - more obvious in the large view.  Maybe the cloud pattern was like that, but I know sometimes I hit the erasure brush and create a pattern I wasn't aware of.  Really cool.

Another beauty, Scott. You're definitely on a roll with these compositions. First it was Gary (actually Nick before him) and now it's your turn. The 'distracting' dune on the far left is an interesting thing. It does draw your eye to it but I don't find it distracting. It's as though playing a supporting role. After you feast on the main attraction there is this additional feature. As with the previous image there is the dappled light on the dunes and then the great sky. A really excellent image.

Wonderful light and textures. Love the foreground dune and think B and W was a good choice. I agree with cropping the upper left dune. Inspiring black and white with lots of contrast. Do you use Nik Silver Effex or do everything in Photoshop?

Scott, I really like this image!  The texture of the sand leads one through the image.  Really nice!

Scott, Wow, This is another fantastic b&w image you made at the dunes. Excellent composition with beautiful light and shadows. For me the far left dune looks fine and I think it even adds some balance to the image. Doesn't get much better than this!! Cheers!

Mesmerizing.  B&W was an excellent choice for this, as it lets those patterns in the sand be the star of the show. Comp, exposure, processing all are great. The dune on the left does show up, but my eye just bounces from it right back over to the center and right.
This must be downright amazing printed out big!  Well done.

This is one type of landscape which is sadly lacking in Scotland.  We have to content ourselves with a couple of hundred yards of rolling dunes next to a beach.  Wonderful textures beautifully rendered in mono.

Another very nice dune image, Scott. The light is wonderful, and B&W was a great choice. I am on the fence with the light-toned dune on the far left, but I do see Igor's point. Lovely textures, here, that you have captured very well.

You were treated to some amazing conditions and absolutely killed it Scott.  Love this, fantastic light, super comp, awesome sky, it just doesn't get any better.  I would crop the left lit dune personally, but who cares, with or without it, it's money!!!!!!!!!!

The foreground is incredibly detailed and fascinating, Scott. However, IMO the background is better in your previous image. The dunes' texture are always very attractive. Well done.

Scott,

The ONLY negative thing I can say about this image... is that it's just not as good as your last one, but awfully close!

Another beautiful, grand b&w landscape of the dunes.  I love the texture and lighting of the main dune here; the patterns are almost mesmerizing.  While the mountain isn't the main element or that important, it does lack a little detail - hardly worth mentioning and not hurting the image as well.

The composition flows nicely, back and forth, front to back.  The only thing really that makes me like the previous one a little better is that I liked the mountain range/sky combo better in that one.  But not fair really to compare the two - they are both outstanding b&w images.

Looking forward to more?

Thanks again for the comments/suggestions. Much appreciated. Just to explain a bit, this image was actually taken looking north/northwest shortly after sunrise, with the sun rising in the northeast (in May), hence the still backlit (shaded) mountains (Panamint range, I believe) in the distance. The previous image was shot about an hour later looking the other direction (south), with the sun over my left shoulder and lighting up much closer Tucki Mtn.

Very nice work, Scott!  The lines and texture in the sand give the composition a lot of energy.  The B&W processing looks good with a wide tonal range.

The tones and pristine look of this excels!  I have come back more again...and again... though late with the comments...I must say, "Wow"!   Part of me wants to run out and stomp, churn my feet and feel that sand which shows so well in the foreground.  The other part of me wishes to print it big and hang it next to a couple of Ansel's photos.

Scott, this one seems a little dark to me, so you might experiment with brightening the mid-tones and near-blacks just a smidge and see if you like the change.  The brights look fine.  Of your two images, preference is for the first as it has a better flow into the image to my eyes.

Scott: Masterful processing here IMO. Makes me want to revisit some of my images from there and to revisit the place physically. Exceptionally good work >=))>
