My friend Lon wandered up my way for a couple of days. It was great fun cruising around the Sierra Foothills and making images. Some time ago, I asked him about focus stacking for Depth of Field, and how to make the exposures in the field and also how to create the actual stack in post processing. During his visit, he patiently showed me how.

This image, although nothing dramatic, was perfect for working on the technique. This image is a stack of three exposures, and is my first attempt at doing it. I would appreciate your thoughts, especially regarding front to back sharpness.

Nikkor 18-140mm @ 23mm

Please see the large version. Thanks!

Your thoughts on my previous image and this one are always appreciated. cool

I like this image very much, Preston. And it has nothing to do with focus stacking. Well seen composition. Great job.

I don't see anything wrong with the stack, Preston.  I'm sure some one with your technical proficiency will have no trouble with that part.  Unless the wind is blowing it seems pretty straight forward in Photoshop.  I like the comp and the light is real nice.

Preston, I really like the looks of this. The light is wonderful and the colors look great too. Perfect mix of green and yellow of the grass is very pleasing and especially with all the lichen covered rock mixed in. I do almost no focus stacking but the sharpness looks excellent to me here.  I like this image!

Excellent image, Preston. I like all the detail in the rocks and the scattered little yellow flowers. Excellent near to far dof via the stack.

I thought I was the only one who did not focus stack. Of course since you now know how I guess I am still the only one. sad The lighting is gorgeous as are the details in the grasses and the lichen covered rocks, Preston. The large version is a must to really savor all those details.

At this resolution the sharpness looks great Preston. The details in the larger version are lovely. This particular comp doesn't grab me, but I'm sure you'll put the knowledge to future images that make my soul sing. cool

Great job processing this one Preston!  You must have had a great teacher! sad  Well, to be quite fair, your image processing is all you anyway... but I recall in pulling this up on your computer, the RAW file was pretty darn close in terms of color, sat, etc.  This came out beautifully and looks great of course in the large view. No issues I can see.

Love the color mix between the greens, the little yellow flowers with the rusty reds, the blue/cyans of the lichen; terrfic combo of colors.  I also like the arrangements of all the elements.  Just a lovely, mini landscape.

No nits or suggestions what so ever.

Lon

ps. Good call driving to this location!  Well worth the friendly run-ins with some local property owners.... ;-)

Preston: The color palette and textures make the image for me. I don't stack so I can't comment on that aspect but this looks pretty darn good to me. 2 thumbs up! >=))>

This is nicely done, Preston.  I like the v-shape formed by the rocks.  The color contrast is also beautiful.
