Patagonian Mara Family

We visited the Valdes Peninsula a couple of years ago for a few days after spending time in Northern Argentina.  This was a mammal species we really wanted to see and photograph.  On the last day out we found a family.  I wish the youngster was more visible and in focus but I was happy with this family portrait anyway.  About 90% of full frame.

I'm so glad you found them, Nate.  Is the male in the back?  Wonderful detail on the one in the foreground, and the baby is, as animal babies always are, so cute.

Thanks Barbara, I am not sure which is the male and female here.

Neat photo, I like the  position of the OOF one in the BG.  This does bring back some memories of my early zoo keeper days when I took care of a group of these guys.  Could never tell how many there were as they had quite a burrow system and were always going in and out of it.  Thanks for sharing.

Nice portrait Nate. I like the lighting and your choice of DOF to get the really clear shot of the near one with the great poses and the baby peeking up to see what is going on. New one on me too.

Hi Nate,

And add one more to the "new one on me" camp - have never seen an image of one of these guys before (let alone a whole family of them!). In a perfect world I'd prefer a little more separation between the in-focus main subject in the foreground and the OOF one in the background, but I suspect that to happen would be in the "herding cats" category of ease! enlightened

Thanks for sharing...
