The July monsoon over the Rosillos Mountains, in the remote northern section of Big Bend. "Rosillo" is Castilian for a horse color that is sort of a light reddish/brown, something like a Bay or a Roan in English. In the late afternoon sun, the mountains look like Rosillo horses in the distance. From

P.S. One should never substitute Spanish for Castilian. There is no Spanish language, any more than there is a British language. Castilian, Catalonian, Galician and Basque are four different languages spoken in what is now Spain, just as English, Welsh, Irish Gaelic and Scots Gaelic are four different languages spoken in Great Britain. English and Castilian were the languages of the empowered elites that ruled over the British and Spanish empires. A pet peeve of mine - my mother tongue is Castilian, my father's was Galician, and my maternal grandmother's Catalonian.

4 commentsThanks for the language lesson. I bet most people think that those mountains were named by a Spanish explorer.
