Crater Glow

This is from my honeymoon in Hawaii in 2013. Halemaumau Crater at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island. I cropped in a bit and added just a little bit of foreground to raise the crater slightly in the composition.

5d2, 24-105L @24mm (at least that's what the exif data says...I could have sworn the crater is much further away from the visitor center than that)
120s @ f/8, ISO100

It probably is that far away, just bigger than you thought. I like how the setting allows only the reflected glow and some small detail of the crater. It leaves the viewer not in any doubt what is being seen and photographed.

I like the warm glow throughout the sky, Craig. My house does not have a fireplace; a large print of this photo would substitute nicely.  Very attractive image.

This is pretty cool, Craig.  It looks really hot.  I love that you can see the rim of the crater.   Very nice.

Makes me think of Jupiter's moon, Io.  Feels like a pretty hostile place.  I like the way you brought it back as a picture.

What an eerie glow from the crater. Would love to see this display someday.  I think you did a good job of conveying the mystery and power of the place.
