Down--Not Forgotten

Lon and I were wandering around (we do that a lot) at the St. Mary's Pass Trailhead near Sonora Pass when I found this very old Lodgepole Pine. It had fallen many years ago and sunlight and storm had worked its magic.

I could have punched up the yellow and red saturation, but decided to leave it more mellow.

Nikon D-7100
Nikkor 18-140mm @ 75mm
f-16 @150, ISO 100
TK's masks.

Please see the large version. Thanks!

Your thoughts are always appreciated. cool

Works beautifully for me, Preston. The large version shows off the textures and details of the fallen pine rather nicely. Great work.

Love these gnarly old lodgepoles, Preston.  I made my living with these old beauty's.  I will never tire of seeing them.  Nicely done.

Great texture and tone.  I particularly enjoy how the longer I look at this, the more little faces and creature heads I see in the wood.

I love these kind of intimate images Preston.  No real nits, but wonder if more of the left side could be included.  That sort of circular area seems somehow incomplete.

A lovely, subtly warm abstract, Preston.  While you could get away with more red warming, I think this works well as presented.  The details around the "knot" are great.

Preston, really enjoying this one. I'm drawn more to these type of close up images as time goes by. I've got a few similar takes that are some of my favorites also.

This really shows the detail of the gnarly old wood and has an aging character throughout. Nothing flashy or in your face about it. In fact the image or specifically the old tree seems to have a real calming feel to it. Gosh, if the old ancient trees could talk they could no doubt give mankind a real lesson on life. Nicely seen and photographed.......laugh

Preston,

Sorry I'm a bit tardy on this one. Just got back from a trip up the CA coast and so have been absent a bit.

I remember this well and I'm quite impressed you culled this out of that old weathered and beaten log.  I also recall the two faces - the first day, dry and drab, then the second day after the soaking rain and overnight dew... this old gem came alive.

Masterful job on the processing; capturing the life and keeping the color/sat/contrast in perfect step.  The composition you selected is wonderful as well.  And if I'm not mistaken, you have yet an even better one in the wings?  All I can say for now is that this one is exceptionally crafted.
