One more from this area of Capitol Reef.  One question I have about this one is whether it is too busy. I think converting it to B&W   makes it less busy, but I am used to the image and I was there, so my perspective is not what others viewing this for the first time will see. Single image. D610, 18-35 @ 18, 1/100, f14, cpl, GNDs (hh), slight crop from original.

Scott,

This just might be my favorite of the ones you've posted from here.  The rounded lava? rocks and foreground landscape really add an intriguing element to the overall grand landscape image here.  There's an added chapter to the story of this place and this image captures that wonderfully.

The b&w processing is excellent here.  Fabulous image, great work!  devil

Thanks, Lon. And, yes, black lava rocks.

I see what you are saying about the business. I wonder if you vignetted the lighter margins, especially the bottom and left, a bit if that would help some? I really like the drama of the shark's tooth, but it does get lost in the shuffle.

This is real nice, Scott. The tonal scale and range is excellent. I think John's suggestion for the slight vignette is a good one. I like that you held good detail in the distant mountains. Well done!

The larger version is a must see. I agree with Lon that this may be your best rendition of this subject. I think the dark dramatic sky works well here with the sharks tooth. The shadows on those distant mountains are just marvelous. I wonder if lightening those fg shadows would reveal the beauty of those rocks a bit better?

Scott, This looks fantastic! Your composition is very nice (not to busy) and the b&w processing is perfect to my eye. The dramatic dark sky with those clouds looks perfect to me and I really don't think you need any changes. Looks like a wonderful b&w print to me. devil

Sweet b/w Scott.  I don't see a thing I would change.  Really well done.  Not too busy at all.

Maybe a bit busy, but I think it works. Perhaps because I know the area very well, and I know that reality is busy, I think that you have captured what is really out there. No nits!

Works for me, Scott. I do not think this is busy at all. The side lighting is wonderful and has created some wonderful details and textures that really shine in the large version. The B&W conversion is beautifully done and those clouds add some drama to this desert landscape. Nicely done.

Hi Scott,
I like this a lot.  The black rocks in the foreground are fabulous.  The sky is really captivating, especially in the higher res. image.  I can see what you mean about it feeling busy.  I think it is the dark, mid-ground texture.  Perhaps lightening as Igor suggested? or perhaps a vignette?  I can also image a couple of additional crops, not at a replacement for this composition, but more as a way of experimenting.  Perhaps cropping almost a 1/4th or 1/3rd off the right (just to the right of the smaller shark tooth) or even off the left (to the left of that side's smaller tooth where the notch cuts into the most distant rock).

I do think there is something about simplicity in b/w wherein texture (on a vista, not so much on an abstract) can become  overwhelming.  In this case, I think you are on the right side of that line, but I can imagine being further from the line too.
