Frozen Empire
by Basil Greber
Aerial view of the coast of Greenland. I took this shot from a commercial airliner on a transatlantic flight between Europe and California. This was in March (though March two years ago), so even during the day, the sun was sending warm and grazing light across this epic landscape. I chose to render this in monochrome because even though the light was really beautiful, the color rendition looks a bit muddy due to the high altitude from which it was shot (and through a window).
I initially didn't think much of this one, but I sort of re-discovered it a few days ago when I was asked to look for photographs of granite peaks. Looks like it has kind of grown on me after two years of incubation time.

This is fascinating and quite dramatic and effective. I don't fly a lot and I've never been over Greenland, but I've been over mountains and have always been in awe of the view from 35,000 ft... I've also attempted to take pictures through windows and so can appreciate what you've captured here.
There's a realistic aspect to this - one can recognize the mountains and glacier... but there is also the abstract. I think the light and shadows as viewed from such an elevation create a wonderful abstract look to this; especially the shadows projected up top.
I hope you're already glad you pulled this from the archives.
