These birds are skulkers in the reeds, so a busy scene is nearly inevitable.  I did get shots of this bird more or less in the clear, but I liked the intense hunting attitude here and thoght the reeds crossing with the neck actually added to the image.  I selected the bird and the two crossing reeds and emphasized them while reducing contrast, saturation and exposure of the rest of the image slightly.

7Dii, Sigma 150-600 C @ 215 mm, hand held lying on boardwalk, f/8, 1/500, iso 1250, aperture priority, pattern metering.  Processed in LR & PS CC.  Cropped to 13.8 MP before resizing.  Taken at 8:23 am on April 12th at the Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center in Port Aransas, TX.

Comments and critiques are always appreciated.

Thanks,

Dennis, you're quite correct about their hunting grounds, and I agree about the obstructions which only further emphasize their typical habitat. This is a fine stealth pose with a harmonious color palette and good detail. Thanks for sharing.

Ah hah, it's the red skulker...  The bird's colors let it stand out nicely from all of it's surroundings, Dennis.  This works well in terms of showing the bird in it's habitat.

Interesting. Without the X this might be a pretty good image. I think that some reeds overlapping the bird may give a sense of environment but the X is so prominent and geometric that it really draws attention. Good busy subject. Personally I don't find the surrounding reeds to be busy.

Very nice, amazes me how much this bird resembles a green heron. I like the colors and how the reeds mark the spot with an x around the birds head.

After reading Igor's comment I find myself thinking that the brighter reed crossing in front of the Bittern leads the eye out of the frame, so I went back and burned it so it hopefully fits in the the bg reeds a bit more.  Here's a repost.

If you click on the image it will open as 1200 pixels.

Thanks,

I think the repost has helped, Dennis - that reed was a bit bright.  Love the image - very strong environmental feel.

Another really nice shot Dennis. I really like the color of the bird against the reeds here. I see why you would post this for a busy scene with the two crossing reeds in front that give a nice sense of depth and setting.

Repost is great, allowing the focus to be more on the bird than the one bright reed. Excellent posting for this challenge, and beautiful bird posing very intensively.

Dennis, plenty of busyness taking place here in this one. I really like the peekaboo or peering around look of the bird.
The repost works much better, nice job on the updated image.....laugh

Great picture Dennis! Those little boogers are hard to get a picture of. The reeds add to the picture so I don't mind the complexity. Keep up the good work! Ry
