Hooded Merganser

This was taken yesterday afternoon.  I have finally come up with a new solution that allows me to get very close to water level and this is one of the results.  This female Hooded Merganser has been circulating around my area solo.  It came close enough to allow me to get this decent shot.

Iso 640, 200-500 at 440 mm,F8, 1000 ,D 500, handheld, about 50% full frame, DxO Photo Lab, ACR 10, Topaz adjust, Topaz De noise, TK, sharpening action at 50%
(I make one comment here about why 440 and not 500 mm?  This is one problem I have with the Nikon 200-500 mm lens.  There is no lock at 500 mm.   I have Lens Coat on the lens and occasionally it is difficult to tell whether one is that 500 mm or less.  In the heat of the action of taking pictures, sometimes the lens will slip below 500 mm.  Perhaps others have had the same problem?)

Really beautiful water you captured here. Nice low profile. I would selectively reduce teh exposure on teh merganser a bit to see if that improves an already great image. Well done.

Lovely, David.  Excellent detail in the Merganser and the water is really nice-I love the reflections in it.  Nice to find a low angle.

Lovely water and excellent low viewpoint. Nice position in the frame. The feathers seem over sharpened on my monitor.

I know what you mean about the 200-500. I was out shooting a winter rarity this afternoon and was at 480 instead of the intended 500mm the entire time. I need to develop a habit of twisting the zoom all the way at regualr intervals.

David, this gal is really on the move given that wake. Excellent detail and well composed, great colorful water, too.

The detail and color, especially in the water, is excellent here David. I don't have any experience with that lens, but occasionally my 100-400 will loosen up and if I am not paying close attention I will discover after the shot that I have bumped it somehow.

The water colours are like a water colour painting! Just wish the merganser was swimming towards you, though.
