Horned Grebe & 2nd image

I've had at least two pairs of Horned Grebes spending time in my neighborhood over the last week.  They've come close to the shore at times when I haven't had my camera but yesterday late afternoon, I was ready for them and one of them just popped up right in front of me.  It was probably 50 feet away which is pretty close.  It stayed there long enough for me to get about 10 shots.   Fortunately I had reasonably good light.  Horned Grebes are fairly uncommon inland and typically spend most of their time on the coast.  They winter on deep open water.  This one is in its adult non-breeding plumage.  The eye is quite distinctive and depending on the light can be deeper red than in this image.

Iso-500, 200-500 at 460 mm, F8, 1250th, handheld, D 500, 60% of full frame, DxO Optics Pro, ACR 10, Topaz adjust, TK sharpening action at 40%

Excellent detail and a very nice pose, David.  The eye looks like it might have the nictitating membrane deployed-I've heard that grebes have nearly transparent ones.

He is beautiful, David.  I am not familiar with the Horned Grebe, so find it very interesting.  That eye is really cool.  I like the low eye level view captured of him.  Very nice shot.

Here's another very similar image that was taken about 30 minutes later in slightly warmer sunlight around 4:30 p.m.  In this one, the eye is a little deeper in color.  I didn't know then nictating membrane on the Grebe was nearly transparent.  Hopefully, the grebes will stick around long enough for me to get some more pictures.  This one was iso 500, 200-500 at 500 mm, 1600th, F9, handhelds, D 500, about 60% of full frame, DxO optics pro, etc.

I like both, I think the original post is the right one.

Both nice.  The second one shows the eye color more closely to what I'm used to seeing.  They should stick around.  I saw one in April on the Oregon coast.

Very cool.  I've only seen Pied-billed Grebes.  I agree with Dennis about the eye.  I'm glad you're having this opportunity.

Hi David,

I like the original one without the nictitating membrane.  One of my favorite birds.  Well done.....................Jim
