Yellowlegs Landing

Caught this Yellowlegs coming in for a landing at the Gilbert Water Ranch. I liked this frame best right at touchdown because of the water splash. I think it gives the image even more movement. I am terrible at determining the difference between a Greater or Lesser Yellowlegs, but my guess would be this is a greater.

Your talent for action shots is really on display in this image, Kurt.  I love the moment you caught.  I do think the partial reflection could go as it feel chopped off at the bottom of the frame.

Really nice image Kurt.  Timing is right on with the splash.  Superb.

Beautiful, Kurt.  The touchdown is in its own right, but the fact that it's about to spoil some really smooth water makes this moment even cooler.

Well, nobody mentioned the point of view so I'm going to say that getting down as low as you did to catch this makes all the difference.  The water is really an important aspect of the image.  Shooting at F8 creates a superb range of focus that affects both the foreground and background water in a way to isolate the Yellowlegs  perfectly.  Yes this is a Greater Yellowlegs.  A Greater Yellowlegs has more of a noticeable curve in the beak.

Greater yellowlegs.  Beautiful image.  I love the water color and texture.  Great timing on the landing.  Looks like this could have made a pretty good reflection shot as well.

Incredible detail considering the obvious motion.  I like the colors and pattern in the water. Nice eye-level shot.

What a shot, Kurt!  Top notch in every aspect, color, detail, composition, and definitely stop action.  I just love that reflection, icing on the cake.

Outstanding Kurt! Perfect timing, I love the look of the water. The low POV really adds a lot IMO.

Excellent. Greater Yellowlegs is the default yellowlegs here although Lesser occurs at times but in far smaller numbers.

Do you recall which pond this was on? How often do you get up to visit now that you are in Tucson?

Hi Kurt,

The horizontal view fits the bird comfortably in the frame.  Pose is great and the splash capture is excellent.  The bill is fairly stout and upcurved which is a good character for separating the greater from lesser yellowlegs..................................Jim

Kurt amazing clear sharp photograph of the Yellowlegs... I am wondering what it would look like if I counld see the complete mirror reflection. The water is so clear like a mirror. I agree the landing right at touchdown is outstanding!

Wonderful timing with the splashdown, Kurt. And although the reflection is incomplete, what's there is sharp and complimented by the silky surrounding water. Excellent work as usual.
