Salmon Watch
by Gary Minish
This juvenile bald eagle was at a small pond next to the highway and was watching for one of the land locked salmon to swim by. It was a difficult but interesting lighting condition. The pond and the bird were in the deep shadows but the snow covered South facing mountain tops across the valley were lit up by the direct sunlight and were reflecting in the pond. There was very little color saturation in the bird and the ground due to the shadows but the reflections were pretty intense. I warmed the image up as much as possible without totally distorting the colors and added some selective saturation to the bird. I wasn't able to get the rich brown of a juvenile eagle in the sunlight but it was better than the grayish blue color of the original image. It worked out pretty well as the eagle ended up being color coordinated with the reflections in the water.
