Malayan Night Heron

Hi everyone Happy Thanksgiving, I have been mostly offline photographing in Thailand and Taiwan with NPN member Chuck Gangas and another photographer the past couple of weeks.  This shot is from Chaiyi, Taiwan.  This species which I had never seen before and is reclusive in most of it's range is now easily seen in the open in city parks in Taiwan.  Interestingly it was also rarely seen in the open until a few years in Taiwan.  This juvenile was hunting worms on the lawn of the park and was very tame.  I am guessing the change in behavior in this species which has as far as we know only occurred on Taiwan may be evolution in action, over the years birds learned that humans in cities in Taiwan were no longer a threat whereas in the past these birds may have been hunted and persecuted.  In this shot the wind was blowing the crest, I could have used a bit more room at the bottom but I was happy to get the crest up here.

A handsome bird to say the least. An interesting effect with the blurring below the bird, is that something you did in post? devil

Thanks John, I didn't blur the area below the bird in post processing, it is out of focus because I was shooting from a low angle.

Interesting to see a night heron with yellow eyes.  I do like the windblown crest, and especially the soft foreground and background, which isolate the subject here.

Nice low angle, Nate.  The missing virtual legs aren't a significant negative with this angle and composition.  Beautiful plumage detail and the feather patterns on the breast are really cool-they have an odd patchwork quality reminiscent of bustards.

Hi Nate,

Large view is awesome.  The tip of the bill is unusual.  Details are nice and composition works for me.......................Jim

That's some amazing narrow DOF for 5.6, very impressive to nail the subject.

Thanks everyone, Jim the heron was feeding so there is some debris stuck to the tip of it's bill.

Congratulations on the new bird Nate devil

And you were able to create a sweet portrait too. Your low perspective really brings this image to life with the three toned foreground and background colors complimenting the sharply focused heron nicely. The crest puts this one over the top for me.

Sweet One!

A very interesting bird, with some impressively complicated feather patterns.  An excellent, detailed capture of it also, Nate!  I like the soft bottom from the low angle.  It makes the bird stand out even more.  Congratulations on the new bird and the excellent photo of it!

Nice that the wind fluffed up the crest for you Nate. I love the blurred foreground here as it really adds to the composition, IMO.

I can't believe how cooperative this guy was.

What a fantastic looking bird, and what a lovely shot! The oof foreground makes it look as if the bird is rising out of some mysterious primeval swamp!
