Sand Pecker + Recrop

This acorn woodpecker was picking dates off a palm tree and burying them among the base of the fronds on other trees. It may have dropped the date in front of it on the beach on the flight over, or it may have been trying to bury it in the sand. It didn't stay long on the beach. Canon 60D, f5.6, 1/1250 sec, iso 400, 100-400 ISL ii at 400 mm. Thanks for your thoughts.

This is really nice, Ed, particularly for its uniqueness, but also for the image quality.  My only suggestion would be to crop from the bottom about half way to the bird's feet.  I think it would improve the composition a bit and also get rid of most of the oof foreground sand.

I think Dennis has a good suggestion. Otherwise, this is a very nice image.

Thanks Dennis and Jim. Here is a repost with some of the bottom and some of the extra sand on the sides cropped out.

This is a very fine image of a beautiful bird.  I love the fact that it is in a very unusual place for a woodpecker.

Always neat to get a woodpecker on the ground, I like your repost here Ed.  The shot doesn't look tack sharp to me, this camera has very good iso performance so I would have bumped it up to 800 and stopped down to F8.  devil

Definitely an interesting behavioral image.  I've never seen a woodpecker in the sand.  I definitely prefer the repost.
