Edge of Blue (plus crop)

I wonder what the effect of Instagram and the trend of websites to present images/thumbnails as square on how we compose. In any case after playing with crops, I decided square was best with this one from the ever popular Vermillion Lakes.

Square works for me! A beautiful image with great lines.

Shimmering with an interesting crop...
I like the curve a lot, the instagram crops are probably here to stay maybe but
I think this would be better in a wider crop.

I wasn't even aware that square format was a trend - I need to get with the program!  I think it works fine here.  A little off the top and bottom would give a more traditional crop and place a little more emphasis on the projecting ice and the reflection.  Beauty of a shot and love the moodiness of this.

I like the square crop here Kah.  The beautiful texture of the ice shelf leading into the image works very well.  As a small nit, I would crop a bit more off the left to cut out the tree top that pierces the horizon there.  Very minor.  Sweet blue light image.

The light in the large image is amazing Kah.  I do think I would prefer a more traditional crop with a bit off the top and a bit off the bottom. Call me a dinosaur....

Wonderful blue hour image, I love the light here. The diversity of blue tones in this image really create a lot of visual interest. And your processing has done a great job of capturing the twilight mood of this scene.

I'm another dinosaur, I would prefer to see a traditional crop here, which would emphasize Mt. Rundle more. The square crop does a nice job of emphasizing the ice patterns, but IMO creates too much negative space in the lower left quadrant. Perhaps I've become too trained to look for compositions in the traditional aspect ratio. But I think a square crop might work here if you cropped away from the left and bottom to reduce the negative space.in the lower left (cutting the left peak in half, and cropping below where the ice starts to go straight down).

Beautiful! I like the square crop, but I was thinking that it would look great cropped inti a vertical by taking some off of the left. I really like the zigzag of the ice.

Nice square Kah Kit.  I like the square format.  What a thoroughly fashionable Fuji Velvia film shooter I must be.  I knew if I waited long enough I'd be back in fashion just like drainpipes and flared trousers.  Love the midnight blues and dimpled ice thuile.

Kah Kit, I like the square format, but think this would look better as a 4x5 taking some off the bottom. I think the expanse of water lower left is a bit too much. I love the blues in this, the textures of the ice, and the rippled reflection. Very nice.

Love the blue hour Velvia look here. I'm finding I've been looking at square crops a lot more recently. To me this image looks great either way, square as is or crop off the bottom.devil

I like the square crop, but agree that 4:5 ratio would look nice, too. I love the blue, and there is just enough white in the snow on Rundel to add some spice. Nicely done. sir!

And here's a 5:4 crop :D Vertical doesn't work as it clips the edge of the ice on the right while making Rundle too imbalanced to the left.

The repost looks better to me. One thing nobody has mentioned is the shadow of the ice on the water. Even though it's a small part of the image I really liked it. Glad to see that the crop didn't remove it.

Kah Kit,

As others have mentioned, I'm really loving the blue hour presentation of this scene.  As far as the crop, I think both work beautifully.  Square may be a SM trend, but guess what?  It's been a format since the beginning of photography, so nothing new here.  Square is often pleasing - as is the 4x5 ratio (biased former 4x5 shooter....)

Everything in the composition works beautifully in both versions.  If anything, the square original showcases the lead-in feature of the ice edge, and for that reason I would give the nod to your original.
