Thank you for your comments on my recent postings.

A quiet morning in a rock strewn field. I liked the swaths of dry grass among the scattered rocks. There was a very slight breeze, so I set up for a fast shutter speed.

Nikon D-7100
Nikkor 70-200 @ 145mm
4-image stack for depth of field
Exposures: f-11 @ 1/500, ISO 320
TK's masks
Cropped a small amount from the bottom

Please see the large version. Thanks!

Your thoughts are always appreciated. cool

This turned out well. It is not real soft light, but it works well in this image. Getting picky, I might dodge the dark rock coming in from the upper right edge (one rock down from the top), but not a big deal. Nice use of the new lens!

New lens eh? Early Christmas present?  I like this Preston,  nothing earth shaking, but a nicely seen solid image.  Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Nice mix of warm browns and grasses, Preston. If I had to guess it looks volcanic.

Preston, a fine look at our local surroundings that nicely illustrates that there's beauty everywhere, not just in the grand scenics.

Preston, a nice isolated view of these a bit different looking rocks. At least the material looks different to me. Almost as it is large chunks of dark sod or soil.
I think the yellow grass does a nice job of providing a light to dark contrast here. I might try a crop from the bottom just past the lower grass there as the tighter point on the main subject to me brings more focus on the rocks.
Just a thought for another look and not any nits.

Preston,

This gets said every once in a while, and this is a case to remind us all - This is a scene that most folks walk on by or would never consider photographing. These aren't obvious scenes and it takes careful thought in creating successful compositions. And you've done that here.

I like your description of "swaths of grass."   This time of year isn't often that appealing as the hills in CA are transitioning from dead summer grass to the emerging new greens that will be lush by spring.  This is winter in CA. ;-)

I like the balance between the rock and grass and your color/processing is spot on - as if I were there looking at the scene.

I know you've cropped already and I really like the comp as presented.  Any further crop would have to be more severe - and actually a square crop from the top down would be a nice alternative, but of course a different image - more about the rock, than the grass.

Well seen and captured sir! Oh, and fine job with the stack.
