Ice Abstract

Gallery: Macro & Close-upPosted December 25, 2017226 views10 comments
We've had some freezing weather lately and the other day tyhere were some gorgeous frost patterns on the car windows (I posted one in Photo Art), and they inspired me to put a mirror tile out to see what IO might get.  I haven't gotten any decent frost patterns yet, but we had some rain and the water drops froze creating some cool micro structures.  This was taken at about minimum focal distance with a 180 mm macro lens.  I did a fair amount of texture enhancement with Topaz Detail and applied a curves layr yo get the bg dark

5Diii, 180 mm f/3.5 macro, tripod, live view and cable release, f/14, 1/160, iso 8000 (I have no idea how I got that setting-I think I was somehow in the video mode, but the noise reduction software seems to have helped).  Processed in LR & PS CC.  Full frame.

Your comments and critiques are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

I really like ice and frost photos. Such beautiful (and strange) colors and shapes. I also love the surprises upon looking carefully at a photo of ice patterns because the camera sees what I didn't see when shooting it. Now the above image: It is beautiful and contains strange shapes and wonderful colors. Just what I like.

The patterns are fascinating, reminds me of biology class. Pretty cool.

This is a terrific abstract, Dennis.  You've got a fine balance between the lined area and the frost bursts.  The touches of warmth are great additions.

This is really "cool".  Great collection of various patterns; fun to explore them.  How big an area is this?

Allen asked:  "How big an area is this?"

The 180mm macro is a true macro lens with 1:1 magnification.  Since I was near minimum focal distance the size should be roughly that of a full frame sensor or 1" x 1.5" (24 x 36 mm).

Well captured abstract, Dennis. I like the dark bg, and the unusual shapes. Looks like an alien battle plan. devil

Another fascinating abstract Dennis. Makes me think back to my microbiology labs in college for some reason with amoebas and bacterias and fungi.
