Flamingo

I took this a couple of weeks ago at the Sylvan Heights Bird Park.  They aren't open during the sweet light hours, so they were calling for thin cloud cover some that day, but that just didn't happen all that much.  Anyway, I liked the position of this guy's head an neck.  Taken with my Canon 7D Mark II, Canon 100-400 mm L lens at 215 mm, handheld.  Settings were f5.6, 1/1000, ISO 100. 83% of the original frame.  Comments and suggestions welcome.

Shirley I like the composition, coloring and focus. The soft brownish green in the background is a good color contrast to the flamingo and not overpowering. I like the detail in the feathers and the eye/neck. The texture was captured well and makes me want to touch it's feather. nicely done.

I don't see these often enough to know, but it seems to me that this color is pretty muted. I realize it depends on what they are fed, but is this the actual color by your eye? Otherwise, an excellent portrait.

Nice details on the head and neck here Shirley, I would personally prefer to see more of the back in focus too, so you could have stopped down and raised your iso here to accomplish that.  I am moving this to the Man and Fauna section because it's not a wild bird.  devil

Thank you, Jan, Phillip and Nate.  Phil, this is the actual color, but, I had no idea that what they are fed made a difference.  They were in the Eurasian section, so I just figured that that was the color of them in that part of the world.  Not sure.  Nate, thank you so much for moving this to Man & Fauna.  I just wasn't thinking and put it in Avian, it being a bird, and most of my bird shots are in the wild.  I also agree with you, Nate, that I should have had my f-stop closed down more to have more DOF.  Thank you all for your comments and suggestions.  I am really learning here at this site.

Beautiful muted colours here.  The wild ones in Namibia are brighter orange, since they feed on red shrimp. Zoos often use food colouring (boooo)  or shrimp to increase colour.
Love the back view, crooked neck, and BG

Hi Shirley,

I like this peachy view of the flamingo.  Large version has some awesome detail and you were able to get those ridges defined on the dark portions of the bill.  Well done....................Jim

A nice one Shirley!  These birds can be a challenge, but they offer so much not only in the color but in all the different shapes they can form with their necks, heads and feathers.  You have good color and I like your composition, do wish the feathers along the back were a bit sharper.  Thanks for sharing.
