Pointed Spire

Earlier this month, I had the pleasure of joining a few photographer friends in a remote canyon in northern Arizona. The canyon walls and spires of red Moenave sandstone had beautiful white striations.

I like this one a lot, Doug.  The centered comp works perfectly here as the brighter canyon walls together with the spire form a "W".  The shadow areas in the background canyon provide a nice counterpoint to the spire and really set it off and help it stand out.  Nicely done!  devil

This is a fascinating spire, Doug. The diagonals set it apart from the rest of the sandstone.

Doug, I think this is an example of a very creative use of symmetry in composition. There are so many interesting details that really bring your image to life for me.

I just think about toning down the highlights especially in the lower half to keep some more details - but maybe this is only due to some compression in the web presentation. As presented, your processing makes for a very natural look of the scene to my eye.

I'm liking the composition that has the spire in the light against the shadowed background. Well composed!

Thanks for the kind comments.
Peter, thanks for pointing out the highlights/bright areas.  I went back and addressed that in the master file.

I love the warm rich glow of the spire and surrounding rock walls Doug.

This certainly is an unusual rock formation. The spire is well displayed against the shady background. It really stands out. Good usage of shadows in general. I think the composition could be better. In some ways it looks like a statue on a pedestal. One alternative would be to burn in the sunny cliffs on the right and make this into a vertical. The statue on it's own against the dark bg would be interesting as well because it has an interesting form (lady in a dress). Just some thoughts.
