Scruffy
by Dennis Plank
This time of year, between the molting adults and the spottily fledged youngsters, there are a lot of pretty scruffy birds around. This Common Yellowthroat fledgling was the more dilapidated looking of two that came to my pond a week ago. Interestingly, things have been really dead since then. At first I attributed it to the heavy smoke haze we had last week and into this week, but it's been gone the last couple of days and I still haven't gotten any birds coming in. Yesterday the only thing were Chipping Sparrows and today I didn't have anything.

Out here, even the highest elevations are seeing heavy smoke and soot in the air. I suspect all wildlife is affected by it.
