The Dead Season #1

I usually dread this time of year; after the vivid Fall colour has gone and before the fresh snowfalls, everything looks dead or drab.
This year I decided to try and not let my preconceptions get in the way of what I see or want to see.

What interested me here, is that , although I went out to photograph ice formations that had nice patterns containing many bubbles and swirls, I noticed another kind of ice, an ice with no entrained air bubbles at all. Sounds silly, but this seems much more like frozen water and not what I would imagine "ice" to be.

By the end of my walk , I was appreciative of this season, and was hoping the snow would hold off for a few more days, Tim.

Man... talk about leading lines. Great image, draws you right in. Reminds me almost of a prism.

Tim,

We have snow here. Haven't seen the sun in three months, but we have had snow for about two months now. We only had a week of "this time of year," but it can be beautiful in a subtle way.

I quite like the effect of the sun on the maple leaves but find the frozen bit of straw a distraction. I think it might look a bit more dramatic if you were to crop it an inch below just where the sun hits the rock.

Wow Tim, this is quite amazing! I think I see what you are saying about this being more like frozen water than ice. What a beatiful, radiating composition mother nature created for you to find and photograph. Glad you had the eyes to see it.

Great image. You seemed to have opened up to the possibilities around you and you were definitely rewarded. I would leave this as is. I find the twig/straw above water to be an important focal point for the image.

This is really striking Tim. It took me a moment to figure out what was going on - I always enjoy that.

Strangely enough, the barren, freezing up time of the year is my favourite.

Cheers,
Eric

Very nice! And creative... I like it. It kind of feels to me like a little of the space up top is not beneficial to the image.. I think I'd crop a little.. just past the point of the URC leaf. My opinion  ..but great image Tim!

I know I'm stealing Joe's line, but what comes to mind is that this is really good photography. Great arrangement and I love the colors. Excellent!

Outstanding vision and execution. This one is pure honey! As far as the crop suggestions go, I played around with it and really like it both ways, cropped below the upper leaf on the rt and the way it is presented. You cannot go wrong. Super!
