Savannah Sparrow on Broom

I had the great pleasure of going out shooting with Jasper (during his visit here from Holland) and Kwan while the savannah sparrows were out on the lupines. One of our subjects left the flowers and perched on this blooming broom which I found appealing. The background colours are a variety of grasses that were quite red that add to the appeal for me.

Canon 1D2, 500 f4 with 2x TC, ISO 400, f13, 1/320, EV +1/3, fill flash -1 2/3.

While I don't usually go for centered compositions I liked the effect in this case. What do you think?

Thanks for taking the time to look and comment.

What a colorful shot. That perch is awesome and the colorful background really adds.
Really nice shot.

:toast: Very nice Ed. At first I thought vertical would work better but then you'd clip the flower. So yes the centered comp works for me here too

I think this is really special. It even stands out as a thumbnail. Nice how the BG contrasts the yellow flowers and the tiny bit of sky drops just below the bird's head, giving the sense that he's singing above all his surroundings. Not a conventional crop, but I've never been a fan of that rigid doctrine anyway. IMO, an image to publish.

This is fantastic! The yellow flowers compliment the yellow on his head. They provide great framing under the bird. And the background colors are great. :toast:

Wonderfully captured Ed. I think the centered composition works here because of the inclusion of the entire perch. The flowers are such a big part of the image that cropping them out just doesnt seem right.

Ed, what can I say....I'm very thankful for Kwan and you taking me around Vancouver, showing me some of the places where you guys get the magic shots like this one. I had a truly wonderful time. Hopefully I end up with one shot just as good as this. Thanks for borrowing your toy and hopefully you got some nice shots with my "macro" as well  Ok, I'm off to Holland...my flight leaves in a couple of hours. Thanks again and see you in The Netherlands.

TOT ZIENS! :wavey:

Hi Ed,

I'll agree that the centered comp works brilliantly here. Gorgeous perch, and very nice gradation of color in the background as well. All in all, sweet!

Good shooting,
