My first visit to a farm in Wales to shoot Red Kites and what an education that was!! Never really appreciated the skill involved in getting top quality shots of these, as I was always under the impression that it was a staged environment and you couldn't fail to get good images... but it's tough for the novice flight photographer!! I shot about 6gb of shots and have kept about 10 frames and none of them are really good.

Really need a good few visits and a lot of practise in flight photography!!

Unfortunately this is cropped to about 40% of the full frame

Opted for a big in the frame shot to add a bit of impact, so I suspect it won't appeal to most as I generally would have liked more room for the Kite to fly into, but here it is and hats off to the people that have top drawer full frame shots of these!

Comments appreciated

You are being a little hard on yourself Graeme. Slightly soft in a few spots but wonderful banking open-wing pose is really nice. :toast:

Hi Graeme

Having made a number of visits to Gigrin Farm I can tell you it doesn't get a lot easier especially trying to capture them in a dive as you have done here. I love the wing position and even lighting in this image - I think you did really well in nailing this one!

Its really very very nice as posted. I think I would have shot it at iso 320 or 400 to get additional shutter speed and/or dof as it looks like the bird was moving quite fast. That may have improved the slight softness of parts of the image. Still a sweet shot and I would be happy if it was mine. :toast:

From where I sit you had a wonderfull day. Razor sharp eye. Nice lighting, I like your choice of comp. Great pose, good bg. And still you`r not happy with it. That`s called "pro" attitude. :toast:

You may not be totally happy with this, Graeme, but it is still a wonderful flight/action shot.

Hi Graeme, I would prefer to have more room at the left but the way as you presented works very fine because is possible to see the nice details of this shot. Flight shots are not easy but with a proper technique you can have excellent results and the one you have is terrific. I would be very happy shoting 6Gb and having this one  The pose of the bird is simply stunning, very nice shot :jump: :jump:

If you don't think this is "really good" I'm seriously looking forward to seeing your good work. This is a fine flight photo, and the lighting on the underside of the bird is exceptional. Nice work!

Hi Graeme, we are coming in way late on this remarkable image. Your comment hinting of disappointment is beyond my understanding. I'd just love to go out and get disappointed with an image of a Red Kite as good as this one! You're an outstanding talent.
