I don't want to get too emotional here. But wanted to thank Bob and Garth for their incredible input here on NPN, I have learned SO much from you guys, and accordingly wanted to dedicate this shot to them. I hope this is appropriate....

This was taken in Sweden on my last trip. It is a crane calling to/greeting inflying other cranes in early morning.

And keep in mind, I'm not leaving NPN, just stepping down as moderator. I'll be around a lot, just like before.

:toast: :toast: Cheers to an incredible shot and Bob Steele. Krijn, I can't believe I'm going to nit you on one of the best photos I've ever seen...But here goes...In the dark bottom of the grasses/ground, there appears to be some bright oragge spots, maybe noise of some sort. I'm wondering if cloning them out would make this stellar image completely flawless.

Beautiful silouette! love the posture too. Adding to what Dan said, a bit of sharpness increase may add to this already an excellent image. Thanks for sharing Krijn :toast:

What a great photo Krijn! perfect BG colours and timing. Just two very small nits to fix to make it even more perfect. There seems to be a very slight tilt in the 'horizon' and the black area seems to have some 'hot pixels' :toast: :toast: :toast:

Hi Krijn, I subscribe your words, I have learned a lot following the advise of people like Bob and others here  Usually I do not like this kind of "black-and-orange" pictures because do not fit to my taste but, being honest, I habe to say that the one you presented here is simply stunning. The crane silouette is perfect and have a very strong impact on the viewer because perfectly draws the species identity. There are lots of terrific crane images out there in the web but this one is, for sure, the most original and one of the best crane images I have seen in a very long time (and the best orange-black picture I have seen  ) Congratulations for such an excellent work and thanks for allowing all of us to enjoy this work of art. :jump: :jump:

Hi Krijn, as everyone has mentioned, this is image is stunning. The only nit I would offer could only come from a person absolutely obsessed with wild settings for wildlife images. This looks like it could have been photographed on a carefully trimmed lawn. In wild nature, I never see the grass grow this even.

Thanks everyone for all your lovely comments.

Terry to respond to your comment. This was taken at Lake hornborga in Sweden, one thing I know for sure is that they don't trim the grass and that the surroundings are everything but unnatural. The only explanation I can come up with regarding the even grass is that we were there in spring when it is still cold and the grass hasn't grown yet. This unspoiled place is where they stay during their spring migration and so for these cranes it is their natural habitat, to me it looked pretty good

Cheers,
Krijn

Hi Krijn, thanks for the explanation about the grass. I fully accept that it is a natural setting and can easily see how - if the previous season's growth was beat flat with snow or grazed off by reindeer - that the new emerging growth would look just like this. Being wrong comes easy to a guy like me... I've had lots of practice.

I understand how to you it looks pretty good, it's one of the most stunning images we have had posted for some time.

Hi Krijn,

What a delightful image. The moment I saw it I knew that bird was singing good morning. Didn't even have to read your post.

Yes, there are some orange pixels in the FG but that's so easy to fix.

And YES, all of us at NPN are learning from many folks. This is a great site.

Thanks to all,

Carol
