Storm Tide

Last night I tried to make the most of these clouds that rushed in and blocked the sunset after my hour-long drive out to the coast. As the incoming tide swept through the rocky shore, I used a 1/2 second shutter to capture the action before getting wet. A strong grad-filter and a little dodging puts lots of emphasis on the foreground action while maintaining definition in the dramatic sky.

Thanks for comments/suggestions.

I like the radial composition and the dynamic qualities of this. You can really feel the wave rusing towards you. Nice sunrays in the back too, in fact I wish that ridge of rock wasn't blocking that interesting part of the sky.

Nothing to say except I'm really enjoying it. It's almost making me a bit dizzy but I'm enjoying that as well.

OK,

I had a new seascape that I was going to post, but I'm going to have to wait now. Can't post it next to this masterpiece....

This is perfect and somehow feels like a unique take on the 'water rushing in' seascape. Everything about this image is perfect from comp to processing to shutterspeed to the detail of the crepuscular rays on the horizon. I don't know how you do it time and time again. Fantastic. :toast: :toast:

Thanks, Mike. But seriously, post your shot! I've loved your last two.

I was thinking this one might look better with better contrasts in the rocks, particularly at left, so I'm adding this version as well.

I like them both. These should be held up to others as examples of what you mean when you talk of the 'dynamic' landscape.

Marc, I like the radiating lines created by the surf and similar radiating lines in the sunbeams above. Very dynamic!!

I think I would like seeing this in a larger version so that I could really appreciate the way the small light rays in the distance match up with the foreground flow of water. Even in the web version, that was one of the first things that caught my eye, and I really like it. Despite the stormy nature of the scene, the photo is very graphically pleasing because of the classic composition (three rock areas, use of thirds and such). Those things make this a top tier image, but I also wonder at the possibilities in a more conflicting composition (there's a word I want to use that I can't for the life of me remember).

I like the first version more, but that might just be my aversion to change talking  .

Marc,

The balance and comp are superb in this. And while the foreground is emphasized (and you even wanted more emphasis with some processing,) I think the sky is almost equally as important - I really like the sun beams in the distance. I'm not particularly religous, but despite the dark, gloomy clouds and overall tone, I find this image kind of uplifting, in a sort of spiritual way. Lot's of things can be drawn from this image.

Technically, I think you made a good call on the contrast adjustments in the rocks.

Exceptional as always.

Marc, once again you astound me. The composition is fantastic and the photograph almost looks like a pencil drawing. If there was anything I could suggest, it would be that the top of the central rocks and those to the right show some remnants of your grad filter. Those to the left also show a little black splotch. Another incredible photograph.

Christoph

It should be noted (since the image size is so small) that the tops of the rocks are actually black but the bottoms of the rocks are covered in cream-colored Barnacles, making it appear as though the darkening is unnatural or grad-related. I'll look into minor additional adjustment around the fringes though.

Marc: Even for one so B&W challenged as me this is wonderful. I like both versions. If its the Oregon Coast and you shot it I know its gotta be great. >=))>

This is fantastic. I think it needs a litttle tweaking and dodging in some of the darker rocks on the right, left and top middle rock. Then, it will qualify as a masterpiece. It is almost there now. I like this better than your color oceanscapes.

Good photography, Marc.

The compostion, tonal range and overall drama make this one stunning photo. This type of shot really speaks to me. I particularly like the way the middle top portion of the sky mirrors the wave action on the shore. That sky almost looks like ball lightning arcing across the sky... amazing. I noticed you already commented on the perceived gradline due to the cream colored barnacles, and if you can adjust that a bit it would be nice. A great piece of work to be sure.

Excellent image!!!!! Great comp, light, sky, scene, conversion, everything. Just outstanding.

I was about to make the same comment about the grad filter line when I saw a bit of light color rock above the area I thought was the grad line.

It is a beauty.

Gorgeous. Water: our precious commodity. It's time for me to get some filters. The clouds and beams of light and the use of BW.

Excellect use of perspective here. My only thought would be to maybe dodge the tops of the rocks a bit as they seem a little dard from the grad.

Marc, this is one of the finest b/w landscapes I've ever seen. The clouds appear to be funneling into the water and spreading out at your feet. Very, very nice work.

I probably missed the boat here, but here's my take anyway. At first look I didn't really like it. But then I looked closer and started to appreciate what you had done here. I dont think I could have pulled it off. The sun rays in the distance, and the lighting in the foreground surf are really great.

Marc, this is probably the first image that I don't appreciate so much. I cannot tell why, I love the fg. Aslo the sky is awesome, but how it all comes together does not work for me. Probably it has to grow on me...

those are the shots where I really envy digital SLR shooters. The perfect exposure time makes this shot, imo. I really, really like it, but I am sure you have a version with less sky and more fg, which would be the one I would pick over this one...
still, this is a shot, that I would recognize as one of yours immediately.

Great water action Marc. The distant rays peaking thr ough the clouds really makes this for me though. My only nit is the darker areas caused by the grad line.

Marc, this is a fantastic image. The motion of the retreating fg water pulls you right into the image. And the tonal range throughout is superb. Definitely a top-notch production.

Except for the shutter speed, I really like this. To me the exaggerated effect of the water movement is too much.

Wonderful photo, Marc. Great composition. I love the way everything feels like it rushing towards you, both the water and the clouds. Beautiful composition, and I'm pretty sure this looks a lot nicer than it would have in color.

Classic stuff Marc! One of those images where everything seems to be in the right place. The water is great, the lines of the canals are too, and when I saw the sunbeams I thought: "yes, of course, they just had to be there!". Killer image!
