No Clouds Again But Something Else Showed Up

This is another attempt at trying to shot Cannon Beach with clouds but none were to be had. I did have this unusual rainbow show up as well as some strange things in the sky. Not sure what was happening here - I am sure someone knows ! I went here on a high tide trying to capture the wave movement which is difficult to capture here as the waves do not stretch that long on this beach

Thanks for any comments or critiques

I think the sky looks great Kevin, don't know what caused the circle, but I like it, and the soft color is amazing. Beautiful scene and very well done.

Incredible image Kevin. The rainbow arc is magical IMO. The water flow is very pleasing as well, and the reflective color in that flow is gorgeous.

I've seen this cloud effect before - but only once and not as a full rainbow like this. It's caused by ice-crystals in high cloud refracting the sunlight and it's quite a rare phenomenon.

Lovely shot!

Very nice phenomenon (sun halo ?), the circular shape fits well to the rock(s). Maybe I would sacrifice some foreground, because there is not much additional interest

Great -- sometimes you are just in the right place at the right time. Of course, you deserve credit for spending lots of time in the right places, and knowing what to do when the right time arrives. Perfect treatment of a rare moment.

I really like the mood of the shot and the sun effect is a definite attention getter. The colours are complimentary to the mood. I think the comp could be strengthened just a bit by either cropping like Carsten suggested or next time including a bit more of the beach to give the bottom of the image more weight. If I see more of the beach I get more of the wave effect dynamics as a viewer. The image then has more of a pull in effect. Nice shot Kevin.

Make way for the meteorologist. First off...MAGICAL SHOT! Love the colors, comp and water, and the optical effect is just a bonus.

What you are looking at is a halo around the sun cause by the diffraction of light through column ice crystals high in the atmosphere. The two brighter rainbow spots are sundogs (parhelia) which are formed by the same diffraction patterns through plate crystals.

Follow this link for more info:

Again, killer shot!

I believe the rainbow is called a Sun Dog by weather men. It is when the sun shines through high altitude ice crystals. I notice 3 or 4 a year. I have never seen them as complete circles. If you go to weather.com I beleive they have other photos of them, but no were near as dramatic. great shot.

Kevin, as a couple of others have indicated, this is definitely called a Sun Dog. It's pretty rare to get them to form complete arcs or circles. In terms of rare conditions, you got a great pic of something seen less often than even great sunsets. This probably has more marketability than you would first think. Thanks for posting!

No idea of the phenomenon but I like it better than if you had found some clouds. Highly unusual and really beautiful, Kevin. The soft sky compliments the soft water action.

Fantastic shot of a Sun Dog. This phenomenon is caused by sunlight being refracted by ice crystals in the upper atmosphere. Some other interesting tidbits about this is that the ice crystals have to be of a particular shape and the resulting arc is always the same distance from the Sun. I agree with the comment to submit this to Astronomy Picture of the Day. This would also be a good candidate for Earth Science Picture of the Day (http://epod.usra.edu/archive.php3). This shot is super all around.

Kevin,

This is an outstanding capture!!!!!!!
Love the motion of the water, has a nice soft smooth flowing texture, and it goes well with the soft sky. Not to mention, the rainbow type thing you capture, so unique, and adds somehting specail to this shot.. The comp is very nice here as well.

Excellent work here Kevin
