Eastern Sierra #5: All in the family

Ok, ok, yet another aspen image. Of course if I lived anywhere else, it would be maple, birch...

Certainly not very original or creative. It wasn't until I got the film back and started scanning that the thought of "all in the family" came to mind. I see the apsen family, with grandfather overseeing his clan. The adults, an adolescent/teenager and a bunch of grandkids at their feet. Not sure if that comes across to anyone, but for lack of anything unusual about this image, it tells a little story for me.

Comments/critiques always welcome,

4x5, 450mm, V100F

Thanks!
Lon

I'd like to see a little more pop to this one, but it's beautiful regardless.

I'm liking the yellow against the dark BG Lon, I know in print, the detail and color would jump right out at you. Just starting to make some large prints again and what a world of difference from what we post in these compressed images, so I'm looking at everything with a different eye, and I know this is a good one.

Lon, will you please stop posting these great shots? You make me envy! What should I go for if all the great shots are already taken? Seriously, this is just awesome, I love the composition and the light - may I ask if this is dawn or evening?

I really don't think it needs any more 'pop'. Restrained colour is what you do best, Lon, and your images always seem to have the lightest of touches. My only nit here is that the tops of the aspens are clipped but that really is very minor indeed. A beautifully understated composition.

Lon, great comp on this one and the color is just right and beautiful. The title is very fitting for this as well. Nice job.

This does seem a little muted for Velvia but it's still a killer image, Lon. It sort of has that "minature" look about it. Excellent composition and contrast between the aspens and evergreens, conifers, pines or whatever the hell is behind them.

Lon, you didn't mention what time this was exposed. From what little I can see of the sky, I'm assuming late in the evening or early in the morning.

It definitely is All in the Family and I, for one, wish I could see the tops of the trees.

I like the muted colors; they speak of winter.

Lon,,,,,I love the subdued colors against the darker forest. I'm not sure what was above the trees, but I keep wanting to see the tops of the aspens. It's probably my bonsai training kicking in, but the clipped top makes this beautiful group seem somehow incomplete. Still it's a lovely image as presented.

Beautiful shot. The detail in the branches and leaves is fantastic and the background is nice and dark creating a very appealing composition.

Man you have a knack for this quiet beauty kind of image. It's not explosive, but quiet and contemplative. I very much enjoy this, Lon. Well done.

Thanks for the comments everyone. This was taken in the early morning before the sun broke over the ridge behind me. The tops of the aspens got cut off for a couple of reasons. One, the 450mm LF lens isn't a zoom... :-) and second, there was brighter light beginning to hit the far ridge in the background and I didn't want to include it. There was plenty of ambient light and I thought these stood out pretty well against the darker evergreens, even though it's all basically front/side lighting. I wanted to include the tops of the trees, but would have cropped it anyway after the fact.

Thanks again for looking and making comments.

This is a really pleasing composition with a title that actually adds to the image (you'll have to teach me how to do that!) I could go for a little more pizzazz, maybe a small contrast boost on everything but that really white stem on the 'teenager'. This is really a personal preference though.

All in the family works for me, Len. Wish we had more Aspens in MI, but were stuck with brilliant red maples. Beautiful image!

Lon,

I agree with Joe. The subtle color and contrast gives a very nice glow that, to me, very accurately depicts a soft Sierra morning. Very nicely done!

Excellent detail and a nice grouping overall, Lon. I really like the addition of the red foliage on the ground in the FG, but would obviously like to see the tree tops too. However, I fully understand what you were confronted with on lighting characteristics, and with that said we capture the best we can under the circumstances as you have done so well here. Nice work as always.

I like this too, Lon. The colourful aspens against the darker background work well here. Is there any way you can include more of the top? Nicely done.

I like the scene and can see the family as you describe. The leaves feel a little dark to me, and I'm wondering if brightening them a bit would give a little better contrast to the image overall.

Wow, I love that one! very painterly. I must say I'm enjoying it for it's not so bright colors but rather subdued appearance. nice artistic touch, I would say.
