Spring at Pigeon River

This photograph was taken about 15 years ago at the elk area in Pigeon River State Forest. I was out before daybreak to photograph the elk in this field at daybreak. I'm hidden in the branches of a downed Elm tree with my gear set up waiting for morning light. The elk are all around me and I'm waiting for the light!! By the time it was light enough to photograph the Elk had wondered away. I climbed up on the dead Elm and took this photograph just before it started to pour!! Thanks for your suggestions/comments. Larry

I really like the ominous sky being contrasted by the light on the trees/field. Great shot.

Unfortunate you missed your Elk for you certainly captured an excellent scene here, Larry. Might be right side heavy but I think the L shadow serves as an effective counter weight. Idyllic and dramatic at the same time.

I wonder if an elk could make this better than it already is. Great mood and light! I like the bright white cloud - it is a nice focal point and mixes up the dark and menacing sky a bit. There is this shadow on the left: As such it does not harm the image in anyway, but I wonder where it comes from and if the image would be more "polished" without it. This is extremely picky I know, I just wanted to let you know that I noticed it

This is just gorgeous. Love the overcast sky combined with warm light on the grass and the shadows in the foreground.

Dietrich, the shadow is actually from the apple tree. The light is striking the tree on the right side low, creating the shadow. I thought that it would help balance the frame because the frame is heavily weighted to the right. Not sure if it really does though. Thanks for asking. Larry

Hi Larry, thanks for the clarification. Now thinking about this I feel a bit stupid. The light comes from the right - to be recognized because of the smaller shadow of the trunks, so that larger shadow on the left can only come from an object on the right - the tree...

Larry, Any time you can get a sunlit scene with a foreboding sky you have a winner in my book. Plus, this is a beautiful location. Well done.

Beautiful light and sky. I really like your composition, too. Nicely done.

You were out photographing elk with a 4x5 or you had more than one system with you?

Interesting perspective. The scene is obviously side lit, but it looks as if the sun is covered by clouds directly in front of us. Very neat.

The light here, with the dark sky works very well. This looks a lot like prime conditions for a rainbow.

Oh yes. And talk envy. It is more than a year that I touched my 4x5. And do not see any chance of touching it for at least another year. Lots to do at home and work. I'm happy to get out with D80 even.
