Stonecrop On Basalt

by John Williams

Gallery: FloraPosted May 22, 20081,653 views22 comments
This is a stonecrop photographed growing on a basalt face along Highway 14 in the Columbia River Gorge in Washington Sate several weeks ago. (I’m not sure of the species, perhaps Broad-leaved?) I am not sure whether this type of photo fits best in ESS or Flora, so I’m posting this tighter version in Flora and another version of a different stonecrop with more basalt in ESS.

Nikon D80
Nikon 50mm f/1.8
1/15sec., f/16, ISO 100
Blend of three photos for increased DOF

John: This is absolutely THE place for this absolutely superb image. Great find and a striking capture of the textures and tones in the rock. Many, many bravos! >=))>

Beautiful image John. Great light on it and the contrast to the basalt really gets my attention. Excellent stacking as well.

John, What a cool shot. While both the shots are nice I much prefer this from a compositional perspective. Excellent work on stacking. :toast: :toast:

This comp is way more simple than the one on ESS but I actually like it better. There is lots of real nice detail here but I'll bet the brightest yellows were blown out in the red histogram.

I love the contrast between the bright yellow flowers and the more subtle colours of the foliage and the rock. Excellent. Great stacking job as well.

The harmony of the colors of the flower and the rock is a pleasure for the eyes. The red succulent leaves are affected by the iron in the rock? Excellent work John. Here the name of this plant is sedum (crassulaceae).
Cheers.
