Surreal Mystery Morning

Gallery: Man & NaturePosted June 5, 20082,240 views51 comments
This was an early morning scene from The Palouse that I spotted a few days earlier and continued to return to wait for the right light. I liked how the layers of rolling hills created some nice depth but I got some mist involved which increased the depth and mystery of that morning. The weather was going back and forth and everywhere in Washington State there were smaller versions of these lenticular clouds. It is always a good time to shoot when the weather can not make up its mind.

Thanks for the comments

Thank you for the comments. I was not sure about the image as it seemed too painterly ( I have no idea technically speaking why)

The transition from the lush fg greenery to the seemingly dusty distant hills and then the otherworldly looking lenticular sky makes for a fascinating image. A very unique and well crafted photograph.

This is an amazing image! Its increadible that there are no other elements in the picture than the hills and the sky! It creates a really "clean" image. As you said yourself, the light is just perfect! Great!!

Love it Kevin.... the light here is definitely giving a certain quality that is adding mood. THe mist as you say is adding to it. The greens are great, but for me the distant peaks and their tone are more gorgeous. Its all so dreamy. Great capture.

Kevin with your recent Palouse posts I can't wait for mid July when I am there myself. The crops will be different but this rolling landscape with shadow play is exactly what I hope to capture. Changing weather lends itself to lots of different images rather than a handfull of keepers and a whole bunch of similars.

I moved it to Man and Nature since most of this landscape is man-made.

This is one of your best. I've often noticed how the Scottish photographers seem to come up wonderful, moody light most of the time but somehow I don't see the same from U.S. photographers. It's something I've always wondered about. Here, you found that same kind of light and it works very well.
