I have a niece who is interested in photography. She is a freshman in high school and currently shooting with a point and shoot. She is getting quite good at it. I would appreciate any suggestions on photography books for a beginner. Thanks.

I'd say either Galen Rowell's "Inner Game of Outdoor Photography" or John Shaw's "Nature Photography Field Guide" are both excellent as a first book.

When I was first getting serious I had bought a ton of books. I learned more out of the old John Shaw book, A Guide To Nature Photography, or something close to that than I got from the rest of the pile. Look for one day work shops and camera clubs in your area. If she is interested in nature photography I would bet that there are people on this site that would be more than happy to help.

Another vote for John Shaw's "Nature Photography Field Guide". Well written, easy to read, and yet packed with useful information.

Aside from the standard "intro" guides like Nat'l Geo Photography Field Guide, I'd suggest something like Bryan Peterson's "Learning to See Creatively" and "Understanding Exposure".

I second Robert Fisher. For improving and perfecting technique, "Understanding Exposure", and for improving compositions, "Learning to see Creatively" are what really opened my eyes.

After that I've ventured into Galen Rowell's books, since they tend to be too philosophical to serve as beginner books. Certainly my head would've spun around had I started reading Rowell before Bryan Peterson.

I'll jump on the Bryan Peterson Bandwagon, too. Especially Understanding Exposure. I think it is the most well-written book for a serious beginning photographer.
