I don't see myself using it too much, but I do use both video and still on my current camera (Canon S2 IS). I certainly think that you'll see the 1D series have video added, or perhaps a new high end series started. Video and still are converging very quickly, and it's not likely to stop, especially with the proliferation of PJ shooters trained in video. This is mainly because of the web, and some newspapers are starting to require their staff photographers to get training in video, or have it already when they get hired.

If I want to take video, I'll use a dedicated video camera.
While the Nikon D90 can indeed capture HD video it's only at 720, not full HD at 1080. HD video recorded to flash memory suffers from problems of compression artifacting and blocky movement due to being captured at lower bitrates and I wouldn't expect the D90 to have the necessary bitrate (at least 24) to capture reasonably high quality video. Until a new format comes out that can increase bitrates beyond 24, tape will still be the best way to capture HD video at highest quality.
And why is a camera that's more than a few days old a paperweight? Does it stop functioning when a new model comes out? Does its image quality change and become dramatically worse when a new model comes out? The camera makers are obviously happy that so many people think that way but it's not really overly accurate. My 5D is a terrific camera. It was when I bought it and it still will be when/if a successor model is announced. My 40D is a terrific camera. It was when I bought it and it still is now that the 50D has been announced. I have no plans to get rid of either just because a new model comes out, nor do I feel a need to.

Robert, I think Carol's tongue was pretty firmly in her cheek when she made the paperweight comment.
