Are there web hosting services that allow clients to purchase your images for various end uses and the web hosting service then charges according to end use? I`m sure I read about one but now I can`t find it.

Are you talking about stock? If so, then yes in the case of Rights Managed. The stock agency will charge a price based on intended usage. If the buyer wants to use the photo(s) for a different use after the fact, they have to buy a new license.

That contrasts with Royalty Free where the buyer simply buys a one-time unlimited use license. There may be a different fee depending on the size of the file the buyer wants to download.

I guess what I am looking for is a webhost that is set up with a sales portal where a client can buy your image based on the usage calculator found at http://photographersindex.com/stockprice.htm

you could buy lightbox photo software to run on your server. that would serve your needs.

OK, then I think the answer is no. Stock sites will have their own pricing for RM images. If you wanted to implement something different then, as Richard says, you'd have to do it yourself; either by coding it into your website or implementing a third party solution such as Lightbox. But I'm not aware of a web host (i.e., like SmugMug) that will track sales based on intended use for stock images.

Mike,

Perhaps terminology is getting mixed up here. A "web hosting" service or company is simply providing the hardware/servers/networking to "host" websites. They have nothing to do with the kinds of websites or applications that run on them.

There are however companies who have websites, that "represent" photographers and in a sense host the photographer's images. The large stock sites like gettyimages.com and alamy.com set the prices based on a wide variety of uses and licensing. There are any number of smaller sites like myloupe.com where you can join for free, but they don't necessarily have the market share that the big sites do. I joined Myloupe a few years ago and basically use it for pricing calculations....

There are also many "art" related sights that will sell your work for you. Also, places like americanframe.com where you can put your images up there - they add framing/matting and send to customer. You set your own price just for the cost of the image.

Not sure if this addresses your question though.
