Issue with programs and TIFF format.

Processing RAW with PhaseOne CaptureOne 4 yeilds TIFF photo which CANNOT be opened with an old program I have, PhotoImpact.

Doing the same process with Nikon NX2 yeilds a TIFF photo which CAN be opened with the aforementioned program.

Opening the CaptureOne 4-processed TIFF photo with NX2 and doing some shapening and re-saving as TIFF does NOT allow PhotoImpact to open the TIFF file.

Both CaptureOne 4 and NX2 are saving in 16-bit.

To review, PhotoImpact will open NX2-genereated TIFF's-16-bit but not CaptureOne 4-generated TIFF's will not be opened, even after going through another intemediat program.

Phase One support is working on this but perhaps the fine minds on this site can put forth a plethora of information regarding this minor issue.

Not sure if I can help here Larry, but out of curiosity, a couple of questions :

1) Have you tried any other programs to open the TIFF files from CaptureOne (IrfanView is a good one...)? This might indicate whether the problem is with CaptureOne's output, or PhotoImpact's input.

2) Are the TIFFs compressed? What compression type? Have you tried changing it?

David, I've opened the CaptureOne-genereated image with Nikon NX2.

Then I used NX2 for minor adjustments. Then I saved that with NX2. I could not open the TIFF file in PhotoImpact.

However, a TIFF file generated wholly by NX2 from RAW was able to be opened by PhotoImpact.

Since both were generated in 16-bit it appears that the two programs label their TIFF differently.

Is that possible?

To my knowlege that are not compressed.

And I don't have any other programs with which to check this out. I guess there are some 'freebies' out there. The first thing CaptureOne wanted to know was if I tried PS. Of course I don't own that one either. Will eventually, I guess.

Well that's why I suggested IrfanView Larry - it's free and simple and can actually be a bit useful in general. Anyway, theoretically, all of the programs mentioned properly conform to the TIFF specification. There are multiple configurations of file for the same image though, that deal with the way the image is stored. (Quick example - the data could be stored as pixel by pixel values for RGB : RGB, RGB, RGB, RGB, etc.; Or alternatively it could be stored in color planes : RRRRRRRRRRR, GGGGGGGGGGGG, BBBBBBBBBBB, etc.)

I suppose it's possible that some programs may support certain things correctly, but not others. It's strange that NX2 can read CO TIFFs, and write TIFFs to PI, but CO can't write TIFFs to PI. Sorry I can't be more help - maybe you found a real bug in the tools. Hopefully PhaseOne can resolve this for you...

CO is working on it. It is a difficult to get across in writing.

I'm going to close here and download your InfranView.

Thanks, and I'll let you know what comes up. I bet it is me, not them.

It's not that uncommon for software programs to work with one version of another software and not with a new one. I ran into a similar problem with the version of ColorBurst I have for my Epson 3800. Images printed out of PS CS2 worked fine. Images that had been edited and saved in CS3 were not. ColorBurst told me it was a compatibility problem between some changes Adobe had made in CS3 and the version of ColorBurst I have. If I saved the file as a fully editable PDF and printed it, it worked fine. In both CS2 and CS3 I'd save the file as a 16 bit TIFF with the same parameters but it worked with one and not with the other.

Does P1C1 give you an option of how to save the TIFF files? The byte order, in other words? That's what David was referring to above. It's possible that PI can't read one or the other types properly. If P1C1 is, by default, applying compression to the TIFFs, it's possible PI can't read the compression algorithm.

I doubt it's something you're doing Larry. It's quite probably a software compatibility issue.

Robert,.......... and David,

I was able to open TIFF generated with PhaseOne CaptureOne 4 in the IrFanView program.

Robert, PrC1 4 is new to me. From page 66: "Images can be processed from Capture One as TIFF or JPEG files, with options for the file compression, bit depth and color space, in addition to the normal opitons for resolution and size."

It mentions LSW and ZIP as forms of TIFF which are compressed. I'll check my program and see what setting I'm on. I need more RAM and this darn Dell Computer requires special RAM that is really not worth the cost. Better to get a new computer with 2 gigs of RAM for $400 bucks. That's where I am now. Does the expense ever stop? I know, only when I say so.....

In passing, the Ulead PhotoImact progam is old but I believe newer versions are around. It was basically for web production. It is a fairly good overall program and I've used it a lot before going RAW which is fairly recent.

Will keep you posted...

FYI,
PhaseOne CaptureOne 4 is based in Europe. Their support takes about 1 day turn around but I've been happy with their replies and efforts. They've requested a RAW photo for whatever reason. I'm asking them if they want a TIFF-processed photo from each of the two programs I'm using in my attempted flow to PhotoImpact, ie one TIFF from CO and one from NX2. Not sure if this type of info is desired but I'll try to keep it posted...

I sent a RAW and TIF file to PhaseOne CaptureOne 4 on the 12th. Still have not heard any further comment from them. My work flow is now through CO4 then to NX2 for the TIF work. NX2 will generate a JPEG for any mailing etc. Submitted my first photo for large format reproduction to assess what I'm doing, 24x36. Again, will post the findings on TIF incompatability if there is anything of earth-shaking.
