Firefox browser -- images look weird!

I just noticed that when I use Mozilla Firfox my images look different than when using Safari (I'm an iMac user).

I used to love Firefox but lately it just crashes all the time. Now I noticed a washed out look to the last photo I posted here.

Anybody have similar (or different) experience with Firefox?

Frank, I use Safari and Firefox (older Mac G4 using OS 10.3.9), and images look the same on both browsers. In fact, I just downloaded and installed the newest version of Firefox, and the look of images hasn't changed.

What version of Firefox Frank? It could be because Safari is color managed and only the newest version of Firefox is. Even then, I think you have to enable it in Firefox. Did you post your last shot with an embedded profile other than sRGB?

Thanks Steve -- has your version of Firefox been crashing?

David I have been embedding profiles and didn't think about removing them -- I assumed that save for web would take care of that. Something to check into. -- thx.

Are you running Firefox 3? Do you have color management enabled in Firefox? Safari is color managed by default, Firefox is not.

To check the status of color management in Firefox, surf to about:config and search for the gfx.color_management.enabled and gfx.color_management.display_profile parameters.

Cheers,

Frank, no crashing here.

Mark -- many thanks - -but you are driving me nuts!!

I can't find about:config. When I search on Monzilla for color management it hands me a big bunch o nothing.

I just downloaded the latest version (which I had in the first place) and get the same (crappy) results.

Dunno -- up until a month ago everything was grand with FireFox....???...??

So if you have a moment please tell me where I should start surfing for about:config. When I go to About in FF I get info about he release and that's it. When I click on about on the FF home page I get lots of stuff but no config that I can find.

Sorry if I'm being dense.

Thanks,
Frank

Frank - By "surf" he means type "about:config" right into the URL bar in your browser, just like it was a web page. It's not a menu option. Double clicking things can turn them on or off then. You can disable/enable color management this way.

But if Save for Web is stripping out the color profile, this really shouldn't matter. Is it possible your monitor profile changed? And I'd still check the for an embedded profile...with slightly washed out photos, that's often the culprit.

Mark & David -- thanks - that did the trick.

But I think I need to make sure I'm using an sRGB profile -- maybe if I was I would need to cross into geekdom to fix stuff that we mere mortals usually don't mess with (got a warning about my warranty when I ventured into about:config land) -- of course my question is -- what warranty??

Many thanks,
Frank

I wasn't very clear in my description. Sorry about that. Fortunately David cleared things up.

There is another Firefox option you may want to disable - browser.enable_automatic_image_resizing. That one annoyed me for a long time.

Cheers,

Frank, what version of PS are you using? Starting with, I think, CS3 the Save for Web command automatically converts to sRGB. Earlier versions stripped the profile and in those versions converting to the desired profile then using Save As is the preferable route.

Actually, I think there's been some confusion here. If you process a file with, say, AdobeRGB, then post it to the web as is, or strip the profile all together and post, it will look washed out if the browser isn't color managed.

What you need to do is convert to the sRGB profile (not assign the profile, convert to it), and look at your colors then. sRGB should be close to what people will see with no color management. So you may need to tweak the image a bit to get it looking like it should in sRGB. Then try posting and see how it looks in the various browsers.

What I was thinking before was that Save for Web did this for you, but that's not the case I don't think....

Frank, Two more cents to consider.

Go to: Color Management Support ... and I think you will find an adequate explanation.

Check to make sure that you haven't zoomed the view, you want to be at the native resolution . Go to View, then Zoom, and click on Reset and it will return you to the native resolution. It makes a BIG difference and I am running Firefox on a PC--Larry
