I just read an article reviewing the beta version of Vista's replacement and it's all good! Microsoft's Windows 7 looks to be that OS that us Windows based PC users have been waiting for! I'm just going to skip right over Vista! It is to be released late next year or early 2010.

I read an article about the Vista successor several weeks ago. It was in alpha test at that point, if I recall. Didn't realise it had made it to beta yet. I'm with you, Jerry; I'm going to stick with XP until I can skip Vista.

Vista was to be the security fix for XP but with a sexier look and feel. It mostly fixed the security issues but is a hog and lacks performance. Windows 7 looks to be more like a mix of XP and Vista without the clunky performance issues of Vista and the security issues of XP. More in line with the Mac OS. I've really never had an issue with XP Pro, not with viruses or spyware. I don't surf with my workstation, it's what it is, a workstation. I have another laptop that I surf with. BitDefender keeps out the trash very well for me on both systems.

(Knock on wood) I've had very good luck with Vista Home Prem. up to this point. It really is very bloated and is a massive resource hog. But I really do like some of it's features, especially for dealing with photos. I am interested in seeing how M.S. manages Win 7. I try not to get too excited about new OS's until a month after the public release.

Jerry - you may have to wait much longer than that - given Microsoft excellent track record of bringing these products to life in time and obviously w/o major glitches

Arnab,
The beauty of competition from Mac and with the known problems that they have had with Vista. I'm certain that Microsoft has learned their lesson on this. Let's hope so because I'm not switching to Mac, there's no need.

I'll put my Dell up against you Mac any day I don't run with the pack and my custom built Dell is perfect with XP. I just want a little extra security and the ability to use more RAM. This is where Windows 7 comes in.

I am using Vista Ultimate and am going to flatten and rebuild it with XP Pro over the xmas break. Vista is too much of a hog - slow slow slow slow.
And when it comes time for a hardware refresh I'm walking right into the Apple store.
Windows 7 is just a rehash of Vista. M$ is sooooooooooooooooooo lost on the desktop OS front.....

Rick,
I think that it's much more than just a rehash of Vista. Here's a little more info on the new OS.

Well, given their continuing market share even after the Vista fiascoes (which are pretty much totally resolved now, despite what you may here), they must be doing something right, right? I, personally, like them both, but have stuck with Windows due to familiarity and cost. My Windows' boxes have never given me a problem, and, given enough RAM, a lot of people find Vista to be faster than OSX. If it's a dog on your machine, the fact that it IS a bit of a memory hog is probably killing your bos.

Hey David,
From what I've read, the biggest problem is trying to run Visa on old hardware. Vista needs to be on a new box and also have the SP's up to date. I'm still running XP Pro and I'll probably stay that way until Dell builds my next mobile workstation with Windows 7. I love the ability to walk in to my office and dock my laptop and have firewire 800 & 400, USB 2.0, and best of all, eSATA, plus dual monitors (one of them a 24" HD widescreen! All by just clicking it in! This thing is freaking awesome!

Well, I haven't used Vista for much (running CS4 on my XP Pro machine), but it has seemed very "snappy" when I have used it. Mostly just for Office and browsing though - nothing too major - but it was on a much newer computer than mine.
