Have a look at this picture. It was taken with a 1,474 mp camera! I guess the mp race isn't over for yet then

Someone told me recently that current 35mm lenses would be out-resolved at around 35mp and medium format at around 60mp..I wonder what sort of lens was used on this camera!?

This is almost certainly a composite of multiple shots.
still quite impressive though !

The Gigapan is actually not a camera, but a mechanical device designed to work with various point-and-shoot cameras. What the Gigapan does is let you set the "corners" of the image and then proceeds to take a series of shots with your camera as it precisely moves across the scene 100s of times until it covers the area you wish. Then you use special software to combine all the images on your computer, much as you would when creating a panorama shot.

Thanks for that Dave, still very impressive and amazing what can be achieved nowadays.

If you do a search for "gigapixel images" you'll find lots more...

THIS LINK explains the image panorama.

THIS LINK describes the "camera/stitching" system.

Pretty interesting.

This is a very impressive photo, but definitely put together. I just found this flaw, unless there is a man with a hat but not a head and a woman with a goatee.

Big Hat - Aretha Franklin who sang the national anthem.

Also, Take a look at the Press Box to the right of that white tower just left of center frame. It is pretty interesting to look at the camera and video and lighting equipment and those huge lenses with cameras on those monopods. Just an interesting view of equipment for me! And then the Press Box in the free standing tower to the right of center frame is filled with some lenses larger than I have ever seen before.

There are a few other cut off heads and such but it's still a pretty interesting shot.

Very cool. I figured there'd be a pano robot out there but never would have thought it would be affordable. I wonder how long it takes to stitch one of those things.

Wowsers! for less than 400 bucks I'd call that a steal. I bet a Canon G10 would be a serious force to be reckoned with atop the Gigapan. I have seen these type of pics before, but never dreamed that one could be had for so cheap.

There is a 8X10 wooden camera in the frame towards the lower right, a 4X5 press camera on the ledge behind the President and another 4X5 on the press stands directly across. Lots of cool photo equipment at that event.

The 8X10 was used to make this daguerrotype image of the inauguration. Per this post at The Online Photographer.
