Saving JPEG's

This really doesn't disturb me as much as it raises my curiosity as to why. When converting an image from a PSD/TIFF to JPEG I sometimes get the message from PS3 that the image must be saved as a copy. No big deal but I'm wondering why.
I can take two different images and in PS3 flatten layers, convert profile to sRGB, resize as needed and convert to 8 bit from 16 bit and yet sometimes PS tells me the image needs to saved as a copy and sometimes not.
This is more of a curiosity question than something that really interrupts my work-flow.

Do you have layers or additional channels in your TIFF/PSD? If so, that's why. JPEGs can't be saved with layers or alpha channels intact. You either have to flatten or save as a copy. Flattening doesn't do anything to alpha channels.

Robert,
Thanks for the pointer, even though I flatten and set the mode to 8 bit for conversion to jpeg the alpha channels are not removed. Manually removing those channels does the trick.
