Ice Stasis

Lochindorb, Dava Moor, Scotland.

The shallow waters at the edge of peat enriched Lochindorb had frozen solid after an unusually long period of extremely low temperatures. Caramel coloured stones stained by the tanins line the bottom while a constant stream of tiny bubbles de-gas from below. These bubbles had frozen into trails each one emanating from around the perimeter of the stones. I braved the ice, dancing out on to its surface in an ungainly ballet with my tripod and slithered into position to photograph these beautiful details from directly above.

Please view LARGE due to compression at the smaller size.

Wow Ian, this is fantastic! I love the gold glow of the three rocks and how the bubbles appear to be radiating out from the center. :toast:

Outstanding! I almost get dizzy looking at this, the movement feeling of the textures - as if they are radiating outward - are incredible :toast:

Very, vert cool! I love the colors of the stones, as they seem to be glowing. The ice and bubbles work together to make me disoriented... almost as if the lens was zooming out. This is neat.

Very cool. The bubbles give the illusion of motion. I don' t know how you processed this. It kind of gave me a little motion sickness after staring at it awhile.

Love it! The first thought that came to mind was it reminded me of a butterfly wing. The shot has lots of wow factor.

That's the best ice/rock close-up I've seen so far this season! This thing has a TON of impace once you get past the thumbnail.

This is an amazing and beautiful abstract Ian! The bubbles give motion to the image as if the rocks were just dropped in liquid ice.

I gotta admit that from the thumbnail, and smaller version, I wasn't real impressed. But after seeing the larger version, I have had a total change of opinion. This is super unique, and I can't find any room for improvement. Very cool.

Way cool! The thumbnail looks like something out of a science project, but you just have to look. I like your explanation too.

while the small one had me dizzying for a moment, the large file is great. Super macro shot! we have similar ice conditions and was doing some "ballet" on a regional lake, too - funny and scary, isn't it...
