Slippery Slope

A small cascade in Marin County, CA, shot from a rather precarious vantage point. I'm also including a black and white version. [In comparing the two, you may notice that in the color version I cloned a branch that obstructs part of the top of the falls.] I appreciate all critiques and comments, including whether you prefer one version over the other.

Canon 5D, 17-40L at 29mm, f/16 for 0.6 seconds (ISO 100).

Inviting, fresh and natural. Love it!

On balance, the mono version has the edge, I feel as it seems to tame the overly bright LLC. Not a biggie, though. Both versions are excellent.

This is a lovely composition, simplifying what could easily be a complicated subject. I would go with color because of the quality of the greens.
Those falls must be pretty loaded with water right now!

Nice work Phil. My vote is for the color version. I think Julian mentioned the bright foreground. I'd consider darkening the foreground just a touch to help bring more focus to the falls. Nice image. Is this from the Cataract creek trail as well? If so, I know what you mean about precarious positioning. Nice job.

Mike, this is the uppermost fall along the Cataract Trail. It's not the toughest vantage point to reach . . . just slightly off the trail. But as I alluded to in the title, getting out there is complicated by the slick rocks, moss, and leaves, and the cliff gets quite a bit steeper to the right of the frame.

Thanks to all for the comments so far! I actually did darken the LLC a bit in post-processing, but I'll consider taking it down a bit further.

Definitely like the colour, and like the clone you did in the colour version as well. There are many subtle compositional elements that are in play here from foreground to background--well done.

I like the lush greens in the original Phil. Perfect exposure for the water as well. Strong comp with the diagonals.

Very nice. The background trucks really complete the scene for me. I prefer the color version.

Nice shot - there's just enough happening with FG rocks and the BG trunks to favor the color version.

The colored version for me Phil, this is a great shot! Love the composition and the mossy greens here, they work very well in this one.

Phil, one thing about a good image is it can most of the time work in black and white as well as color and that is exactly what is going on here. Very nice work, I find it to be a tough decision choosing between the both of them. I think you have created a problem for one that would like both, they equally great photographs.

This is not the typical waterfall shot because of the dynamic angle here. I like how the water matches the visual flow of the image. My eye cascades down the rocks with the water. I also like that you have a wonderful foreground with something other than water. IMO, the black and white frame takes away from the image. I'd like to see it with a simple photo-on-white presentation.

Oh baby, color hands down. A gorgeous photo Phil. The elements are what are so striking here, especially their arrangement. The image starts you on a diagonal rock area into the beautiful rush of water in the same direction. Above that stunning cascades overpower the mid area, and the moss covered trees add the final element of strong lines in the bg. There you have it, great image.

Really nice waterfall shot and from a different perspective too. I too prefer the colour over the B&w.

Color for me. I really like the comp, color, and light. It's a different slant  on a waterfall.

I prefer the color version. The greens are an important part of this. My thought my be to darken the foreground some to put greater emphasis on the water.

This is excellent! And a fine addition to the images you captured from that day. I imagine they are all from the same hike? I like the black and white, it has a nice graphic appeal. But for me it is the color version all the way. I just don't see removing the color from all that beautiful lush green moss and foliage. Are there any quaint little falls with a nice pool in front along this trail?

Couldn't have guessed at how lovely this photo is by looking at the thumbnail (not totally unusual, I know). What I like the most is the balanced layers of foreground middle ground and background. I didn't expect there to be so much to explore. Nicely done.

and I like the color even thought the b&w is great too

Thanks for all the comments. I really appreciate the feedback and the suggestions regarding the foreground.

Chris, this is actually from a second short (half-day) trip that I took last week. I still have one more from my first trip down to this location that I'll post at some point. As far as your other question (quaint waterfalls/nice pool), this trail can't remotely compare with the Columbia Gorge in that sense . . . I take it that's the kind of setting you're referring to. There are a lot of nice spots along the trail (and slightly off of it), but no cascades that have made me say "hey, this looks just like the Gorge."

Both are beautiful Phil, what a lovely waterfall and perspective. The trees in the back add so much for me. In the end the color gets the edge for me: it seems to reveal more of the intricacies of the scene.

I think I am leaning more toward the color version, because those greens really make the falls stand out. Very pleasing and relaxing to look at. Beautiful capture.
