taken with a Nikon D40x using a polarizing filter as well as a
ND2 graduated filter I used a tripod and 800 ISO. it was shot at1/100 with a aperture of 5.3 and would welcome comments regarding technique and composition. I waited to get the right cloud cover to avoid a major white out from the sun

hi, bob. this is a sweet sunset indeed. colors are nice and so is the light. there are some things you could correct here, for instance the tilt in the horizon and some noise reduction too. that leaf showing up in the upper right corner is a tad distracting too. the image would win a lot with these minor issues corrected. overall, it works nicely for me.

NIce composition and color Bob. Looks like the horizon is a bit tilted, but that easily fixed.

Very nice sunset scene the horizon, if it was an artistic license does not really disturb me as I see the photo as well balanced. I like the red reflection on the water.

Lovely colours and a great sky. Bruno gave you some good advice.

Personally, I would have used a lower ISO and a smaller aperture to get a better depth of field. As it is, the palm fronds are somewhat blurry and therefore kind of just feel like they're in the way. However, it looks like there are some jpeg compression issues and perhaps a lack of sharpening, so you may be able to get those fronds sharp just through your post processing.

That is a gorgeous sunset. I would straighten the horizon, and try to reduce some of the noise. I think if you go as high as 800 iso, you'll always get some noise. Maybe have to get yourself a d700!!!!

Bob, nice color, the whole image seems a little soft, and slightly tilted. If you were using a tripod why 800 ISO?

Beautiful colors, Bob. One reason to use a fast shutter speed like you did would be to freeze the palm branch so that it was not blurred from movement. In this case, however, I think I would just embrace the movement and shoot at ISO 100 and an aperture between 11 and 14. Some folks like to freeze the water movement like you did here but I am kind of fond of the silky movement captured with shutter speeds of half a second or more.

I thank all of you for your constructive comments. I certainly can straighten the horizon very easily, and I'll have another five weeks to practice additional sunsets which I will post. I have a very inexpensive portable tripod which gets a little insecure in the sand, however I always secure the camera around my neck when using it. I will try a lower ISO as well as shutter speed to see what difference that makes a future sunsets. Thanks again lucky
