Fall Beginnings

This is an image from last November. Actually, it wasn't supposed to be a "beginnings" shot, but I missed the real color of fall in this area by about two weeks, according to some of the beautiful images I saw here! So I had to settle for the two or three early-bird leaves that managed to find a spot image. Due to other things, I wasn't able to return later to reshoot.

This is a multiple frame image, and the full size shows incredible detail. The "news" link on my site has more information about the capture details.

All comments and suggestions are welcome! Thank you!

40d, 10-22mm at 20mm, 16 frames, each bracketed, then hand blended for exposure and detail.

Great composition, the FG is spot on, but I find the falls and surrounding rock a bit over exposed.

I love the vibrant greens - so lush and alive. This is very well composed and well thought out, and you did an admirable job on the blending - looks very natural.

Very nice shot.... but.....I do not like the waterfall. I don't know how to explain but it looks "overdone".
I suppose it was a necessary function of exposure time but I wonder what a slightly faster shutter speed would have done.
Just my take on this fine photo.

Beautiful image with great depth and framing of the falls, though I have to agree something looks off about the waterfall itself.

An interesting composition with lots of lines and structure that makes a coherent overall impression. I also like the technical aspects - very well handled. Strong work Cory!

Lovely greens and browns and a nice lead-in provided by the rocks. I agree that the fall itself looks 'wrong' somehow.

Cory, I think the contrasts in lighting here works nice, however the foreground seems a bit chopped off for my taste. Being extremely familiar with this spot, I think the background is a little too much brown/red, but the falls themselves look fine.

Very cool sir. Went to the site to check out your ramblings. That's a lot of photos...yikes. I've found it better/easier when doing multiple blends/stitching to blend each individual frame first then stitching. I've tried stitching the 'dark' and then the 'light captures but for some reason they blend/stitch different which makes blending impossible. Great detail there and nice light :)

This is a real work of art. There is something about the waterfalls that
doesn't look natural to me. Nevertheless, I really like this, Cory.

Thank you for the feedback, everyone.

Regarding the waterfall, I agree that it stands out. The shot was take at dusk, with blue sky overhead, and the falls area was exposed, whereas the understory/stream was well shadowed. I think that this location tends to shoot this way unless there are clouds overhead spreading the light more evenly between the two areas.

Marc, thanks for your observation and suggestion. I'll check the color there. I did take several comps, including of course ones made famous by yourself and Chip. Honestly, I was hoping to find a comp for myself, but this is a difficult spot for that, as you know!

Aaron, thanks for the feedback. I have used the method you suggested as well, and agree that in many cases it produces a faster workflow. It this case, the only issues in terms of exposure were at the peak of the waterfall (slightly overexposed on the primary image), and shadows under the immediate large foreground rock. Because I only used the "reposition" option in PS, I was able to bring in the two correctly exposed images, align them automatically, and paint in the better exposure with TK's masks. Actually, I think either method would have worked fine, I just ended up using that one.

I see nothing to critique, Cory. This is an outstanding image with amazing luminosity and color. I can't even begin to fathom the work that goes into post-processing an image like this. Great stuff.
