Little Lakes Valley

From a recent (and much needed) backpacking trip in the Sierra Nevada. After being turned away from uncrossable rivers in the Yosemite high country, I decided to head to a more familiar location just south. I thought of reducing the reflection off the water with a polarizer, but given the direction this is facing would have ruined the sky (and at the time I was too lazy to do a multiple exposure), so feedback on this particular portion of the photo is appreciated. Thanks for looking and commenting.

I like this, Greg. I'm not too bothered by the relatively bright reflection of the peaks as it seems to reinforce the glass like quality of the lake surface. That said, IMO the immediate FG may be a tad bright (the log in particular). A half stop reduction might do the trick there.

I have an opportunity to backpack next weekend. Any issues getting through this valley without snowshoes?

Very nice composition. I like how the log leads you into the image, the wonderful reflection and color to the sky. Well seen, way to go.

Great texture in the water and the rime on the FG log really adds to the sense of a cold dawn. I wouldn't worry about the reflections in the water as they add interest. Besides, there is too much emphasis on perfection generally these days and that just leads to soulless, clinical work, imo.

Thanks for the critiques!
Anish, I see what you mean about the brightness. RE conditions, I didn't even use my snowshoes..the boots were enough although I did punch through with a posthole now and then in the deeper parts (especially since the snowpack didn't freeze overnight). I'd expect that the lower portion of the valley (up through Heart Lake) is fairly snow free by now, although it was very muddy and along some parts the trail more like a deep creek.

Hey Greg,

Beautiful pre-dawn glow. The snowy peaks reflected in the creek is like a dream. I do have to say that the image is a little complex. It seems like there are 3 separate regions: the mountains, sky and reflection; the dark trees on the right; the bottom half of the image. I think if you could compose this without one of those regions things would flow better for me.

Sounds like a great trip. I'm heading up to the Yosemite high country and Tioga pass tonight. Looking forward to seeing some of this stuff :toast:

The water is particularly interesting for me as the flow has a fascinating metalic look that might have been lost with the use of the polarizer. The light is memorable and the comp just right. You might try darkening the reflection of the mountains just a bit. Superb!

Lovely light and I like the clear pristine conditions : sky and reflections. I might make the mountain reflections a little darker, that's all.

Greg,

Excellent wide angle and near/far composition. I like the diagonal of the log and the outlet leading the viewer's eye's in to the scene; the wonderful reflection and early summer snow on the Sierra. I also like the highlights in the water and that there is also some transparency - so you get the best of both worlds. No nits from me, I like this very much.

Really nice Greg, love the like you caught up here and the ripples in the water. An awesome place in the southern sierra! How much snow was on the trail?
